Halloween 2009

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints.

But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en),

The Gauls claim all to be descended from Father Dis [a god of death, darkness and the underworld], declaring that this is the tradition preserved by the Druids. For this reason they measure periods of time not by days but by nights; and in celebrating birthdays, the first of the month, and new year’s day, they go on the principle that the day begins at night.

Some other names are also associated with the Celtic New Year:
The Third Harvest
All Hollows Eve
The Day of the Dead

And the famous Halloweens Day.

The Celtic Druids eventually came to be viewed as witches, and the subsequent witch craze led to the horrific murders of vast numbers of women, men, and animals, particularly nocturnal animals, with cats most frequently targeted. It was believed that witches could shapeshift, and that they would most often take the form of cats, which were believed to be their familiars. In some cases cats were thought to be reincarnated witches as well.

The widespread slaughter of cats during this time contributed to the human death toll from the black plague, as cats had kept the population of rats that carried plague-bearing fleas under control.
Okay what about all those good treats?

The tradition of trick-or-treating dates back to the early All Soul’s Day in England, during which poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries called “soul cakes” in return for their promise to pray for the family’s dead relatives. The distribution of soul cakes was encouraged by the church as a way to replace the ancient practice of leaving food and wine for roaming spirits

I love Halloween. The costumes, the candy, the parties, and the memories. Thinking back I don't know which I enjoyed more: the costumes or the trick-or-treats.

I'm still a kid at heart. The lure of the spooky whether I am doing the monster mash or drinking Bloody Mary's with the undead.

Have a very scary Halloween

Petunias, Flowers in the Window

Petunias Flowers by the Window
Petunias Flowers by the Window, painting by Delilah Smith

About This Painting:

I like the sound of the word Petunia . It makes me smile and think about Petunia Pig in the cartoons. I was charmed by these little flowers because of the way they crawled out of the pot. They quietly wiggled their way to the table top trying in vain to escape the clay pot prison that keeps them from the window.

Trick or Treat

Trick or treat
The history of "Trick'O'Treating" can be traced back to the early celebrations of All Soul's Day in Britain .
The poor would go begging and the housewives would give them special treats called "soulcakes". This was called "going a-souling", and the "soulers" would promise to say a prayer for the dead.
Over time the custom changed and the town's children became the beggars. As they went from house to house they would be given apples, buns, and money.

With the economy being down some artist feel like beggars. It is important to look successful when you are in business for your self. Who wants to talk to a down and out artist? It is just more fun to dress well and drive a killer car. Mine is a bright red convertible. So treat yourself to a little something whether you are an artist or a collector it will put a nice spring in your step and a smile on your face.

1. You signed up early on for a Google Wave account. Google put up a request form for Wave invites not long after Wave was announced. Most of the invites arriving tomorrow will go to people on that list. Your chances improve if you signed up early on and wrote a message to the Wave team.
2. You have an account on the Developer Preview of Wave. The Sandbox version of Google Wave has been active for a select group of developers for several months now, allowing them to test Wave, report bugs, and build Wave extensions. They will all get accounts.
3. Some paying users of Google Apps will get accounts. It’s likely several companies asked Google for invites when the real-time tool launched. They will get accounts. Some schools that use Google Apps will also get early access.
4. You are invited by someone currently using Wave.

Autumn Leaves

Our Oak trees have been slowly turning yellow for maybe a month, but I swear they have “suddenly” turned into glorious yellow beacons.

Maybe the rains cause that? However it happens, I’ve got blue sky, white clouds, warm temperatures and bright yellow Oaks and Maples to keep me company. Life is good!

Where did summer go

This is one of the those weeks that just flew, and I am left scratching my head wondering where the time is going. I love this time a year, but I also start to get nervous as I know summer has come to an end , fall is in full swing and winter is peeking around the corner. I am starting to see little signs of it in the trees and feel it in the air.

One thing I am reminded of is to be aware. What I know for sure is I don’t want to get to the end of my life scratching my head wondering where the time went!

It's not easy to be a successful, profitable artist in any economy, much less this one. It takes really good art, a consistent 'can do' attitude, and knowing all the steps that will take you from your local art scene, to a regional, and then national standing.

Tomato Martin and Cucumber

When I painted this I had no idea there was a recipe for a Tomato Martini. Now I have not tried it but I will. I like Bloody Mariy's so I would think this would be just as taste. Now the recipe does not call for a cucumber but what the heck live on the edge and garnish with a slice.

Ingredients
Ice cubes
1 1/2 ounces gin
1 teaspoon dry white vermouth
3 ounces Tomato Water, recipe follows
2 tablespoons tomato based vegetable juice (recommended: V-8)
1/2 lemon, plus a twist for garnish
Couple drops Pernod, optional
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
Hot sauce
Garnish: Olive, cherry tomato, and cocktail onion on a swizzle stick or toothpick
Directions
Fill a cocktail shaker or small pitcher with ice cubes. Add the gin, vermouth, tomato water, vegetable juice, and a healthy squeeze of lemon juice. Add a couple drops of Pernod if desired--it adds a nice background flavor, but more than 1 or 2 drops will overpower the drink. Season with salt, pepper, and a dash of hot sauce.
Cover and shake vigorously until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, the drink is ready by the time the shaker mists up.) Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add the olive, tomato, and onion garnish. Drink.
Tomato Water:
1 (28-ounce) can tomatoes
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
Pinch sugar
Puree the tomatoes and their juices with the salt and a pinch of sugar. Line a small sieve with a coffee filter and set over a bowl. Pour the tomato into the sieve and set aside to strain, about 3 hours. Discard the solids and save the tomato liquid. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Yield: about 2 cups

Truban Squash

Turban squash, with its bizarre shapes, extravagant coloration and bulb like blossom end, is wonderful to paint,to feel,to write about.

I came to the bedroom
my towel of red and orange a turban squash on my damp hair

I stand a moment uncertain
where have those wiggle worm socks and worn flannel nightie gone
Like the popcorn and the wine on my night stand they comfort me

I sit cross legged in the middle of my bed
prizes found
turban crown, wine in hand, pop corn wedged between my legs,a book of romance and adventure at my side
Queen of fuzzy socks and worn flannel

I am comforted

Inspiration for the Impossible

"The ruby-throated hummingbird is a wonder of migration. Every winter it makes an amazing journey. Some have been known to make a journey of 2500 miles or more, from Alaska to Central America.

Because of it, the hummingbird is a symbol for accomplishing that which seems impossible. It will teach you how to find the miracle of joyful living from your own life circumstances." Ted Andrews, Animal-

A kiss, Cone Flowers

A Kiss, Cone Flowers:

When objects in art just touch it is called a kiss. These cone flowers just kiss on the cheek in passing.
There are many kinds of kisses in life:
Butterfly, one of my favorites.
Cheek kisses, like your auntie used to give you.
Earlobe ones, those I hate.
Eye kisses, what ever. Finger kisses,oh so romantic.
Foot kisses, now that is a whole different subject.
Forehead kiss, like the kind an old lover gives on his way out.
French kisses, now your 16 and really know your way around kissing.
Fruity kisses, those I learn to give when I was in Montana. It was along time ago but I still remeber those sweet little kisses.
Hand Kisses, oh so European.
Hickey kisses, haven't seen that mush passion in years.
Mistletoe Kiss, oh yes I long for Christmas when lissing anyone is allowed if you have a little mistletoe.Note to self buy Mistletoe.
Letter kisses, only when you are 12 going on 13.

I plant for hours
Snug in the deep warm earth

Canned Tomato's

I am the little Red Hen
with a passion I tend my garden
planted the seeds
weeded the vines

Tomato's canned and sealed
tiny bits of sunshine in jars
warm my winter days with jelly bean color
orange,green,and red
brewed,stewed, and pureed too

Not one left behind
not one on the vine
all in mason jars for winter time

State of Relalxtion

State of relaxation was the title I gave to this painting while plien air painting on Little Travers Bay in Michigan. This sail boat was painted in plien air on a day that the rain was off and on all day long. I think the title reflex's the way I felt painting that day.
Today I am off to paint on a farm in Jackson county the day is sunny with no rain in site.

Me at my box or plien air easel.

En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
Artists have long painted outdoors, but in the mid-19th century working in natural light became particularly important to the Impressionism. The popularity of painting en plein air increased in the 1870s with the introduction of paints in tubes (resembling modern toothpaste tubes). Previously, each painter made their own paints by grinding and mixing dry pigment powders with linseed oil.
It was during this period that the "Box Easel", typically known as the French Box Easel, was invented. It is uncertain who developed it first, but these highly portable easels, with telescopic legs and built-in paint box and palette, made treks into the forest and up the hillsides less onerous. Still made today, they remain a popular choice even for home use since they fold up to the size of a brief case and thus are easy to store

Procrastination

Like most of you, I've got a long "to do" list.

There are just some days when I inevitably will avoid doing what I should be doing... I've been this way all my life and nothing short of a miracle or looming deadline is going to erase my tendency to procrastinate. Today I had tons of yard work that needed to be done and my office also needs to be cleaned. I can work on the organization of my office while watching a net flicks so that task will get started. I did paint today. I reworked a painting that I didn't care for the colors in, now I like it better now. So as they say,"keep the chicken flying" a quote Jack White master painter.

Pears

Pears are so much fun to paint, I keep going back to them. I'm not sure which I like to paint more pears or peppers?

My tomato's are are ripe in the garden so I will be canning tomato's at some point today. I am a very visual person, what ever is in my visual field at the moment is the most real thing for me. So what ever activity I start has a lot to do with what I paint that day. I bet I end up with some paintings of tomato's before the day is over. Now off to the post office to ship paintings that have sold.

Expressions in Teal, 1020

In the mid 20th century during and after WWII American artist explored a new freedom in art they also tried new techniques this was the begining of Abstract Expressionism.Abstract Expressionism is suppose to invoke an emotion in the viewer.Today my emotions are in teal.
Abstract Expressionism has no distinct image instead you are looking at how someone feels how it comes across as action, color, and movement. My paintings are always full of color and movement but with this series of abstract work I am concentrating on how I feel at this moment.Today I feel Teal.

Expressions

Mark Rothko’s style is called colorfield painting.
His works consist of strong formal elements, such as color, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale. The things every good painter uses.

Because a canvas is a two-dimensional surface, painting should avoid any illusion of three-dimensional representation. Even so, Rothko refused to be considered solely in these terms, arguing, “It is a widely accepted notion among painters that it does not matter what one paints as long as it is well painted. This is the essence of academic painting…. However, there is no such thing as good painting about nothing”.

Rothko believed that while flat, two-dimensional forms destroyed illusion, they also revealed truth.

What is the truth that Rothko attempted to reveal?
The titles of his paintings offer few answers, as Rothko begins to abandon conventional titles in 1947. Some critics have suggested that Rothko’s works refer to Western American landscape.

However, Rothko declared that there was no “landscape” in his art. Instead, Rothko argued that his paintings are “fully visible” to the viewer. They do not refer to anything else.

In other words, what you see is what you get. Ideally, the viewer would stand in front of his paintings, focusing on large fields of color and abstract forms, and come to terms with the self and his or her own scale. Colorfield painters believe that art could encourage the physical sensation of time and being there with the work.

I have started a series of colorful expressionist works.

Frankfort Michigan

It was a warm sunny day today to bike the trails of Michigan. I had to stop in the park at Frankfort and enjoy the children playing in the big waves coming in off of Lake Michigan.

There is a lot to see in Frankfort, Michigan and they have a wonderful bike trail there. We visited the old coast gard center which is being converted to a new art center.
It is cherry season in Michigan right now. The season is late this year. I put some sweet Michigan cherries on the top of my cupcakes as I ate some nice fresh ones, always good to eat.

Crooked Tree Arts Center Paint Out

Sail Boats in the bay.

Crooked Tree Arts Center 461 East Mitchel Street, Petoskey Michigan.

The day was overcast and looked like rain would start at any time.

I liked the red sail.

I painted this lone sail boat.

The opening night at the gallery.

Two finished paintings are now on display at the gallery until Aug 30th.

This painting I started the day of the paintout but I got rained out just before I finished it. I went back to my room and finished it the next day.

Paint out 2009 Petosky Michigan

There will be artists painting all around Petoskey on Saturday August 1, 2009 for Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Fourth Annual Paint-Out.
Beginning at 8 a.m. artists will gather to have canvases or paper stamped to verify that the material they will be painting on was blank in the morning of the paint-out.
I will be there again this year bright and early for the annual paint out.

They will then venture anywhere in the Petosky area to begin a day of plein air painting. As the sun moves across the sky, artists will be painting and capturing a day in the life of northern Michigan on canvas. The completed artwork must be returned framed and ready to hang between 4-6 p.m. that same day.

At 6 p.m. there will be a wine and cheese reception celebrating all of the work created that day.

All work will be for sale and work will be on display until August 30th. If you can't make the reception on Saturaday and meet a wonderful group of artist from the US but will be in the area later stop in and see the wonderful plien air paintings.

This paint-out is a great way to join artists with the community and celebrate the beauty and talent of this region.

Cows in the Pasture No 3

When I was a kid on the farm July and August were hay baling time. Always on the hottest day of the year we would cut and bale the hay because it had to be dry. Moisture in the bails would cause heat which after being put in the barn could make the hay catch on fire. I had an uncle who had bales do that and almost burnt down his barn.

When I was a kid the bales were square now most hay bales are big and round. I like the round bales, they don't have to be loaded on wagon and taken into the barn like the old square bales that I remember. My job as a kid was unloading the wagons and putting the hay unto the elevator that took the bails up to the top of the barn where they were stored for use in the winter. Nice memories but so glad I don't have to do the work any more. Its much more enjoyable just to paint them.

Just Peachy

For those of you who know me, you know I live on ice cream and there is nothing like fresh peach ice cream.

Peach Ice Cream
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups milk
4 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons vanilla
4 cups whipping cream
2 1/2 cups crushed or pureed peaches, sweetened to taste

Preparation:Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in top of double boiler; gradually blend in milk. Cook over hot water, stirring occasionally, for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until thickened. Stir a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten eggs, then return egg mixture to pan with remaining hot mixture. Cook over hot water, stirring constantly, for 4 to 5 minutes, until it is about as thick as pudding. Chill thoroughly, about 3 hours. Stir vanilla and cream into the chilled mixture. Pour into a 1-gallon ice cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer's directions. Remove dasher and stir in crushed or pureed sweetened peaches; repack ice cream freezer with 1 part rock salt to 6 parts crushed ice and let ripen for 2 hours.

Sunshine Fruit

Sunshine Fruit
Sunshine Fruit, painting by Delilah Smith

About This Painting:

Habits reap favorable results. It seems that simple habits contribute more to success than luck, happenstance, or even a favoring economy. As artists, we need to regularly refresh the habit of truly looking, truly seeing and truly understanding. Its not a big deal. It's just a habit.

Recent studies on the nature of genius indicate that self-generated habits are mighty muscles indeed. While all of us who wish to master specific skills need to tailor our habits accordingly, here are a few for starters: Squeeze out paint in the morning before your coffee is cold.Program creative work balanced with rest, exercise and study. Train yourself to be regular, punctual and workmanlike.Shoot down your lazy tendencies before they shoot you.

Habits, It seems contribute more to success than luck, happenstance, or even the economy.
