Day of the Dead

How did fruit end up as treat ?

How did the few giant candy companies end up stamping out variety, selling giant bags of cheap chocolate instead?

Why are there articles every where on how to get rid of all the candy your kids got Trick-Or-Treating with out letting them eat it?

If they are not going to eat the candy, why not just have a costume party with games and fun?

How in the last few years, how did a trivial kids' holiday turn into a multi-billion dollar out of control industry for adults, complete with ornate houses and bespoke costumes?

Is it because of some well-orchestrated Halloween Marketers of America initiative? It just seemed to happen, didn't it?

Its called: Marketing
Sometimes artist just have to have a little fun and Halloween is the perfect time to play. It's a perfect time to do a little marketing of your own.

Try :

titles that are a little spooky,

colors of fall,

or just have fun with images.

I'm not sure what kind of Treats this guy is looking for but I'm sure he knows how to show a girl a good time.

Give a painting to a friend,It's Free!

Win a free painting - Lily In a Glass Jar, by Elizabeth Blaylock

Day lilies are named so because their beautiful blooms only last one day. Their translucency, and gracefully arching petals shout their unique beauty in this short span of time..
In this painting I strove to capture the subtle value changes and the light glowing through the petals. No easy task, as it is impossible to trump God’s paint brush!! With some subtle value changes and just a few strokes for the highlights I suggested the jar. To keep harmony with the orange of the flower I used some warm crimson in the background. Now, this day lily will be around for a few hundred years if you don’t water it!!!!

Win this painting for somebody special!

Click on the link to view it is wonderful and would make a gift for someone special.

What to Paint

What to paint? My head is filled with idea, more ideas then time, more then simple still lives of pears. I give up half way through for lack of skill. The corps of dead idea are in piles, hidden on shelves,in boxes,in dark corners under layers of dust. They wait in the dark like Vampires waiting to awaken hoping to raise from the dead to be resurrected with new blood to live again. Will more work give them the breath of life or should I drive a streak through their hearts and send them to a permanent grave, or burn them in the light of day. I call from help from my Muse; please give me guidance. She say'"Practice, and the skill will come. The hand will be able to create what the minds eyes sees.Experiment, discover, you are a work in progress just like your art."

The Venus of Willendorf project

Art Prize was about a platform for artist to show what and how they create. Artist Brenda Oelbaum from Ann Arbor Michigan had a large scale installation that had a social commentary to it. Brenda believes in change. Brenda's work caught my eye taking back down the misty road of a young art students first art history class and remembering the Venus of Willendorf. For those of you that have never seen or heard of the Venus of Willendorf here are few images that can be viewed take a look then view Brenda's work.

More about Brenda's installation can be found at the Art Prize web site.
A close up look at Brenda as she worked on her Venus during the show.

This is one of the great things about Art Prize, you can meet the artist, find out what really made them create this work, what direction do they think they will move in the future.

There are also smaller Venus structures that are made of the pages of one specific diet guru eg. Dr. Phil McGraw, or Oprah Winfrey,or Dr.Atkins, The books fill up the room and the sculptures are interspersed throughout the room.

She is currently working on a large scale installation which is both a physical and visual attack and commentary on the US government's supposed "War on Obesity" and the multi-billion dollar diet industry. Her work has appeared in the book 'Art in the Age of Terrorism'. Brenda has a studio in Ann Arbor Michigan. If you would like to visit Brenda's Studio she will be participating in the 11th annual Ann Arbor Art Walk Oct 22-24. For more detail please visit Ann Arbor Art Walk.

Art Prize

I'm still smiling about all the wonderful art at ArtPrize in Michigan that I have seen. The shows is still going so stop in at Grand Rapids Michigan and see it.If you love art plan to join the fun next year and plan a trip. It will be money well spent. Herman Miller will be auctioning off some of its very rare collection to raise money for ArtPrize.http://blog.artprize.org/2010/10/05/herman-miller-auctions-and-sale-at-the-hub/

With 1713 artist and 197 venues is was hard to see it all but I will share some of it here.
The Amway Grand

I loved talking to the artist and her daughter about this work. The artist even made the frame and her daughters dress'!

This is one of the daughter who is in the historical correct painting.

Oh gee whiz its like a place in time. The scene is one of the ball rooms at the Amway Grand.

Everywhere down town and at Frederick Meijer Gardens were place 3D works of art.

A true Michigan Auto worker shows us his stuff.

Large or small it was all here

Now if you cann't get to Michigan but really would like to gove some a gift of art the daily painters are giving away a free painting each week from now until Christmas. But if you win you must give it as a gift. So enter each week and let me know if you are lucky.
