The Dog Days of Summer

Sultry hot wind under blue skies and sleepy eyed cats staying cool under the cedars. Lovely hot Michigan long weekend, with only a touch of breeze to my delight!
Great time for some summer reading. I am reading Twyla Tharp's The Creative Habit.

Grab yourself some summer reading and a good lawn chair, with a glass of something cool. The painting here is as thirst quenchingly cool as a cucumber. What you have here is a Cucumber Martini, a real thirst quencher . Maybe I should have added some fresh mint?

The dog days of summer are nearly upon us. Sweltering heat with no sign of relief, warm winds tossing seedlings in the air skimming lazy bees. The buzz I hear from my studio is the hum of jet ski's on the lake.Today the sky is a deep powder blue with rosy pink clouds. Twilight endures until nearly 10:30 pm.

Summer News Letter

July 2008

Summer News Letter

I began this painting a day project on October 11, 2006. Each day I paint one small painting and post it on my blog if I miss a day due to travel I make it up and post two later, the goal is 365 painting. I have continued this painting goal for 2008 but now I sometimes paint a large painting not just the small studies that I started out doing. My daily painting blog can be found at http://paintingoftheday.blogspot.com

I have started a free painting giveaway once a quarter. When I make the announcement you have 48 hours to send me an e-mail and be in the drawing for a free painting. The first winner was Lyn from Auckland, New Zealand.

It has been a busy year. I have done a lot of traveling this year to much to talk about so I will talk about some of the paintings that I have done:

The year started with a juried show at the Carnegie Art Center. In February I had one of my paintings featured in Art Calendar Magazine, in March one of my painting was use by the Northeastern Organic Farming association for the 2008 national invitation cover and in June I had one of my painting featured with the Daily Painters Group in art Collector Magazine. The new cook book cover of the Peconic Land Trust, Quail Hill Farm came out in July with my painting “Fresh Vegetable” on the cover.

I was accepted into the Oil Painters of America in June. I am now trying to crawl into the new millennium with my first You-Tube. I am posting my small month paintings there. These are quick little warm up paintings done in 60 min. So stop by Delilahsart at You-Tube.

I’m off to Ireland to paint and site seeing with my husband Barry. So check the Web site in September and I will post a few paintings that I will be doing “en Plein Air”.
Enjoy the rest of summer and smooth sailing.

And The Winner Is!!!!

Congratulations to Lyn, of Auckland, New Zealand!

The name was drawn as the winner of the free painting.

Lyn said ,That looking at the paintings on my blog was something to look forward to each day. The choices are so beautiful, the cupcake being the favorite choice.

I'm pleased to know that, and also to hear from the others who entered the drawing for the giveaway. These giveaways are a lot of fun for me, seeing new names on the entries that come in. It helps me know there are more people out there in cyberspace who are enjoying my work in addition to the folks who comment, or purchase

If you were not the lucky winner keep checking back, I had so much fun doing this that I will give away 2 more paintings before the end of the year.

Go ahead and Celebrate Lyn

Renaissance

Cucumber Martini
I am having a little celebration, a renaissance a rebirth today.
Today is not the day of the free painting giveaway it is coming soon.

Renaissance means "rebirth." I am always recreating myself and my work. Renaissance is a term that refers to the intellectual and artistic movement that began in Italy in the 14th century, culminated with Leonardo, Michelangelo and Raphael in the 16th, and has influenced thinking and creating ever since.
The art historian Ian Chilvers has characterized it as "the time when Medieval turns into Modern and the religion-dominated world of the Middle Ages gives way to a culture more responsive to the individual." It has come to mean openness to change, to rethinking, and to the examination and often reinvention of more classical forms.
These days, it seems we are living through a renaissance of realism in a world traditionally dominated by abstract expressionism. Lucian Freud and Francis Bacon, for example.More than anything, renaissance is an attitude that transcends times and places. For creative people, a minor renaissance happens every day as we reassess yesterday's work and adjust our thinking to both its needs and our personal inclinations.
Would-be "renaissance artists" try to range widely in their interests, understanding, and capability. They do many things, know how to quickly research the information they need, do not necessarily follow the recipes of others, and are rather in love with the business of finding out for themselves. They both respect the past and contrive to discover the future. And just like Giotto, Pisano and Donatello, as well as the three guys mentioned above, "renaissance thinking" is learned.
We are always learning. The way I look at it, the idea of renaissance has eight great principles that just might be worth thinking about:
Curiosity as a way of thinking
Suspicion of authority and conventional wisdom
Respect for intelligently filtered history
Aspiration to higher levels of achievement
Vision for renewed potential in all things
Tendency to invent private systems
Reinvention and perfection of former skills
Accepting the challenge of the difficult

Beets Organic Series

I will be giving away a free small painting sometime in the month of July. When I make the announcement you will have 24 hours to send me an email to be part of the drawing.

Lately I have been working on a series of organically grown flowers and vegetables. I am inspired by a so many things, rutabagas, cabbage, endive, lemon grass- I look for things that catch my eye and just look for the beautiful. It all comes together in a weird configuration.

I started this painting with a red undercoating because I wanted it to be warm.

My new series will not only be vegetables but fruit and flowers.

I work all over the canvas asI bring the painting together.

I moved some of the beet lower in the painting to add more interest. What I really like are the leaves.
