Sell More Art

"I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process." Van Gogh

"You don't have to die in order to make a living." Lynn Johnston (1947-), Cartoonist know for her comic strip For Better or Worse

Van Gogh would have loved to have sold all of his work while he was alive but he only sold one "Red Vineyard At Arles."

Technically, van Gogh sold lots of paintings in his lifetime - to his brother, Theo. Theo was supporting van Gogh buy regularly sending him money. In return for receiving the money, Vincent van Gogh would send Theo his paintings, with the idea that Theo had paid for them and they were now his. Van Gogh hoped that Theo would be able to sell some of the paintings and earn his money back.

However, Theo van Gogh was only able to sell one  of his brother's paintings to people other than himself.

Today we are so lucky to be able to reach out to so many people with our art.

Where to sell paintings, is also an important question. You can sell them from your studio or home, through a gallery, at an exhibition; you could also sell them on-line, either through your own web site or another on line gallery site. Hey even eBay (though I don’t expect very high prices on that channel).

If you are going to sell on line hers are a few things to help.

1. Write better artwork descriptions.

2. Be more social.

3. Start an art blog.

4. Create an email newsletter for art lovers.

5. Advertise your art website (in print).

When you’re printing business cards, postcards, flyers, or anything else, include the main website address where people can find and buy your art.
Don’t be shy about promoting your website offline at all—in fact, it’s probably the surest way you can target your artwork to people that you know would want to buy your art.

6. Team up with other artists.

Find a few other artists and join forces. You could create a group blog or just commit to linking back and forth; either way everybody benefits.
The Daily Painters are a group of artists who did just that, and they seem to be doing all right. If you’re concerned about losing traffic to your partners, don’t be. The way the internet works, you can often multiply traffic with each new member, not just add a bit

I am a member and I love it.

7. Stick to it for at least 6 months.

This whole process isn’t necessarily easy, but it will work over time. Don’t get disappointed in a week or a month when nothing seems to have changed. After six months, take a look back.see if your web or blog traffic hasn't gotten better. Check your sales, do you have more? How about a few more artist friends have you made new friends on line? I know I have.

When I paint I often forget the time and hours will go by before I come out of the studio Most of the time it's to warm up my coffee.
