How many ways can I paint tomato's? It seems when I can think of nothing else to paint for the day I grab a tomato from the refrigerator, which is always stocked full of them and start painting. Here are just a few of the juicy little guys that I have painted this summer.

John Cage (1912-1992) was a composer, print maker, performance artist, writer, philosopher, editor, teacher, mushroom expert, collaborator and poet. Fact is, John Cage had a lot of fun . Considered one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century, he produced works with one note, no notes, notes by chance, and a noted organ composition that takes 639 years to play.

Thinking about the life and "happenings" of John Cage, it's not difficult to see that joy, imagination and brilliance flow from work.

Holiday Weekend

Most Americans will spend this holiday weekend escaping from work. Enjoying time with friends at the beach or home.

We'll play and laugh, relax with friends, do almost anything except "work."I paint for a living. I paint to relax.I paint to have fun. But I hope you'll take a moment over the weekend to give thanks for the work you do as I do for mine. Your creative work makes a contribution to this small planet. In some small way, each of us contributes our energy, our talent, our skill to making better, and I suspect that's how God intended it.

Goals

I am in love with goals. If goals were a vegetable, I would pick bushels of them, eat them until I was sick, and then freeze the rest so that I could have a continuous supply of goals through the cold months.
One thing I have learned about goals, however, is that, like vegetables, if you don't use 'em or freeze 'em right away, they go bad. Some of them go bad in a spectacular fashion. Like if you vow to lose 20 pounds at the beginning of the year, forget about the goal, and then discover Haagen-Daas ice cream sometime in June . . . not only is that goal to lose weight gone bad, but it's bad like stinking in the bottom of your crisper drawer bad. With rotten goal juice eeking around it.
And other goals go bad in a sort of failure to stay relevant way. Like if you suddenly crave sweet potatoes and buy a ton of them. If you don't cook all of them, you'll have those few lonely ones left over. They'll never go bad in a fantastically awful way, but you'll end up throwing them away after eight months because you just don't want them anymore. So goals should be checked often and the ones that are really timely ought to be attacked immediately.Continue reading "You Gotta Have Goals" at Red Easel . Painting a day 8/23/08

I got this lovely summer squash at an out door stand at near by farm.



I thought before I ate them. I would do a few paintings. The nice curve of the steam and the lovely yellow color were so inviting.I couldn't resist giving it a try.



I sat up a shadow box made from some old painting boards that I had painted white.




I better look at the set up. It's nothing special but it does the trick.

I started with a quick sketch done in a sepia colored oil.

I began filling in some of the shaded areas.

I worked on the local color and added detail to some of the areas.

Here I blend some of the color.

The image begins to take form.

Back in Michigan

Off the Beaten Path

About This Painting:
Off the Beaten Path is a plien air landscape done in Michigan.I'm back from Ireland and had to get out in this beautiful Michigan landscape and do a Plien Air Painting .One thing about bumping over a few time zones, your sleep habits tend to get disrupted. I'm generally in the studio at 5 a.m. doing one thing or the other but now it had to pull myself out of bed because I've been up half the night. I've always been a night person. I think it started when I was in College and work so many late night jobs, then would come home all wound up and had to keep going because I was too awake to think about sleeping. I've actually been caught sleeping in.I think the early morning hours are best for sleeping about 10 min before you should get up is the best it's so nice and cool with a slow breeze just moving the curtain and the air smell of fresh cut hay. I also like to eat very late. This was a problem in Ireland,in the rural areas they roll up the streets at 9:30.Late dinner like myself have to get moving or have a late night cap of Guinness. Guinness is served until the pub closes.

Crooked Tree Arts Center

Paint Out 2008 at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey Michigan was a wonderful successe. Painters came from all areas of Michigan and near by states to paint the wonderful area near and around Petosky.




If you have never visited the area it is worth the trip. The downtown area is wonderful. It boasts many parks and there are inviting beaches for the weary walker to sit on, with nicely shades areas and a view of Lake Michigan that is breath taking.

A group of artist tak a break and enjoy the cheese and wine at the reception.

Find a wonderful area to paint was no problem. The beaches were bright and cheerful the day was sunny and the view from anywhere offered a painted all kinds of ideas.





The Harbor Park area with the boat docks was one of the areas I stopped to paint at.

The artist all came back to the gallery by 6 PM with wet painting framed. There was a reception celebrating with wine and cheese. All the work created was hung and 5 paintings sold that night. Painting will be on display and for sale until the 30th of August. If you are in the Petoskey area stop at the Crooked Tree Arts Center or one of the many galleries around town, grab some ice cream or fudge and enjoy the view.
