Art in Michigan

September in Michigan means bright sunshine, back to school,crisp apples, football games , and what’s grown to be my favorite fall event ArtPrize. ArtPrize 2012 is ready to take over the Grand Rapids Michigan Art scene starting next week. It opens Sept 19,2012.

There will be 1,517 entries this year at ArtPrize and OMG I am one of them. So put on those walking shoes and take in as many of this year’s 1,517 entries as you can. I sugest you go to the web site for ArtPrize to plan your visit by checking out the Art and the Artist to see which ones you really don’t want to miss.I would used that as your starting point. Every venue has so many artist its hard to see them all.

There are also lot of Art happenings so those you have to be there when it happens so mark the day and time because you don’t want to miss the music or the dance.

When the going gets tough

Museums are dealing with higher taxes and dried up federal funds, and the future doesn’t look much better. So says TrendsWatch 2012: Museums and the Pulse of the Future, a report just released by the American Association of Museums (AAM). It’s a good, important read for anyone interested in seeing how museums have been dealing with the economic downturn, and how they’ve been using technology to help buffer the financial strain. Some of the AAM’s recommendations are still fairly new to conventional non-profit wisdom—like using Kickstarter to fund collections. Overall, the report asserts that museums are  becoming more self-reliant in generating income. One thing is certain: museums are entering a new era.


But this may be a good thing making them more independent. I like that read more on Museums and how they are generating additional income.

Help who painted this?

Is it illegal to draw or paint a picture of someone art and sell it as your own?

Did you know that whenever you make a drawing,painting or other artwork, you automatically own the copyright to it. Copyright is a form of protection given to the  creators of "original works of authorship," including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic and other intellectual works. What that means is that, as the author of the work, you alone have the right to do any of the following:

1.Make copies of your work
2. Distribute copies of your work
3. Show the work publicly
4.Make Derivatives of the work

What are derivatives?  When I was a stock broker I knew all about investment derivatives but it wasn't until I became a full time artist that art derivatives became a new word for me.

A derivative work is a new, original product that includes aspects of a preexisting, already copyrighted work. Also known as a "new version".

This quick course in art forgery:

1. Fake signatures in particular, how to dissect and analyze ways that works of art available for sale online, particularly at auction sites like eBay, are represented by their sellers. 

eBay, for example, does not actively police their auction offerings, but rather depends on emails from dealers, collectors, experienced bidders and related professionals to notify them of problems like possible misrepresentations, fakes, forgeries and similar issues relating to particular works of art. 

As things stand currently, any seller can describe any work of art in any manner that he or she chooses and as long as no one complains, that art sells to the highest bidder.

As a result, eBay and similar online auction sites are among the more dangerous places for uninformed or inexperienced individuals to buy original art.

  Here are a few ways to help you to know if your purchase is a forgery

1.Is the seller listed as living in the United States?China has become renowned as the world capital of art forgery.

If they list their email or telephone number check it out on one of the numerous reverse address search sites find out where that cell phone or email address is really coming from. Many times there will be an Internet listing on the scam artist.

If it is listed as coming from anywhere but the location they provided in the listing be wary!

2. It seems obvious but check to see if they have multiple listings of the same original.

3.If the price the normal selling price for this artist? All artist list lower prices from time to time but this may be a red flag. Go to the artist web site and send them an email to check. 

4. Check to see if the artist is listing under the "direct from artist" if they are selling on eBay.If not:

 Contact seller and ask if he/she can tell you anything about the origins of the painting and what inspired him/her to paint it. Or "are you the Artist?" If you get a no, or I don't know for either of those questions, walk away 5.If they are listing it as signed by artist and they are not the artist ask:" whose signature is on the painting. "

Enter that name into Goggle and if can find a website, email/phone number contact them and find out if the seller has permission to sell their work.

6. Ask the seller, via email if they have any other art for sell. If they respond check the spelling and grammar in their reply. Yes we all make typos but too many is a red flag.

7.  Know where the artist typically signs their art and compare the location of your signature to them. Most artists sign in particular locations on their art. Any discrepancy in location is a matter of concern. I almost always sign my oil paintings on the left in red.

  A major red flag would be if an artist normally signs on the front of their art, but the piece you are looking at is only signed on the back-- not on the front a good indication this is some kind of copy.

8.Check out the Sellers store, if he is selling more than 10 non art items, or his store is listed with a non-art related title he is not an artist. Artist may sell other things with their accounts occasionally but true artists sell primarily ART. Check the feedback to see how much of the positive feedback is coming from Art Sales. If they are going to consistently sell other things they will open a different store.

Carol Marine daily painter tragic fire

Texas Wildfires Claim Artist Friend's Home and Studio

My thoughts and prayers are with fellow artist and Daily Painter Carol Marine, her husband and their family who lost their home and everything they own in the Texas wildfire of Bastrop over the weekend. The family is reportedly safe, but, sadly, in the fires she also lost her entire new studio which was just completed in May of this year.

Carol was one of the original Daily Painters back in 2006 when the wave started to build. I have always admired her masterfully-composed, direct paintings, with her signature brushstroked and luscious color.

The family has good insurance, but if you'd like to donate to a fund to take care of their immediate financial needs, you can find a Paypal link at her book site.

Art on the Rocks

I made it to Marquette, Michigan Art on the Rocks.

The Harbor view was wonderful.

Everyone started setting up their tents. The event was not as well laid out as it had been in years past with lots of dead end rows and very difficult for visitors to find their way around. Many of the artist had had a tough week, because they had just finished the Ann Arbor Art Show in 100 degree heat. The breeze off of Lake Superior was a welcome addition to this event making set up a little easier.

The crowds were light and sales were slow.

After the show the show I took a week off and toured upper Michigan. I ate a wonderful Pasty . If you would like to have the recipe for these wonderful Michigan treats click here. with real full tummies we decided to rest and take the scenic boat tour of Pictured Rocks.

A must see if you are in the area. I wished I had my kayak with me. Another reason to come back again just for the fun of it.

THIS is SCOTT WADE. Check out what he does with the dirty cars by carefully and artfully removing portions of the dirt. According to his web site, he lives real close to a dirt road in San Marcos , Texas ....




Playing in the dirt has never been more fun. Making art should be about having fun and exploring. Scott has the the right idea, you make have to get a little dirty but what the heck. Like the farmer says" If you wrestle with a pig you both get dirty but the pig really likes it."

Michigan Art

I am glad that Michigan has not forgotten the art's. With so many family with unemployed or unemployed family members I know it can be a hard thing to think about. Art can take a back seat when food and housing are on their minds.

The Rust Belt to Artist Belt III conference will take place this Wednesday and Thursday, April 6 and 7 at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Artists, creative business owners and practitioners, educators, and designers will meet in Detroit to explore how post-industrial Rust Belt cities are being shaped by creative individuals in the areas of economic and community development, and land use.

Panel discussions, workshops, and facilitated sessions will be used in order to help identify the best way to use the Rust Belt’s unique assets to encourage economic growth and efficiency.
Featured speakers/panelist for the two day conference include: Greg Garrett, Chief Strategy Officer, IT and Innovation, for Volkswagen North America; Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Arts Detroit, Luis Croquer; Detroit-based singer and songwriter Monica Blaire; Grammy, Emmy, and Tony award winning artist, songwriter, and

director Allee Willis; CEO of Detroit Ventures Partners and Founder and Chairman of ePrize, LLC, Josh Linkner; Steve Coy of the Hygenic Dress League and Detroit Projection Project; Terry Schwarz, Director of the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative; and Philip Delamore of UCA Textile Futures/College of Fashion .

Artists and Galleries

I visited an Art Gallery at Clearwater Beach Fl yesterday. When I am in an area I try to see as much art as I possible can. One of the artist who work I saw was Martin Quen.

Her work reminds me of Kandinsky and Mark Rothko. When I view art I think of it as a visual poem. It can imply,suggest,take you to a special place with it's images and colour. Visual movement is like a song to my soul. Colours bright, cool,warm, move me ,they dance through my mind.

What are you thinking when you look at art? I hope it makes you smile and think about what the artist is saying in his visual poem.

Steven King Moment

I experienced a Steven King moment this morning. In the half light of the morning with a winter crisp fog in the air, I drug the trash container to the road. Its wheel crunching in the hard packed snow. The reluctant wheels turned slowly as snow built up between them and the container. The eerie echo of the squeaky wheel could be heard down the empty street. There was no sound,no people,no movement and what ,no one else had their trash out!

It is Thursday? What day is it ? Have I lost all recollection of time, painting away in my studio grotto?Monday was a Holiday. Does trash not get pick up on Federal Holidays are they now one day behind? Are Trash Men like Bankers? So many unanswered question.

I am just an artist, I paint. Days run into each other my Holidays are the days of breakthroughs, when goals are accomplished, and best of all when someone enjoys my work.

Michigan Artist Mathias J Alten

A little art history a little Michigan Art History today.

Mathias J. Alten produced oil, watercolor, and pastel paintings during a career that spanned nearly four decades 1871-1938. In Grand Rapids, Michigan, both Grand Valley State University and the Grand Rapids Art Museum have major holdings of paintings by this academic impressionist. At Grand Valley's DeVos Center on the downtown Pew Campus over 40 paintings are on permanent public view in the George H. and Barbara Gordon Gallery. Selected Alten paintings are on public display as part of the permanent collection of the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

Frankfort Michigan

It was a warm sunny day today to bike the trails of Michigan. I had to stop in the park at Frankfort and enjoy the children playing in the big waves coming in off of Lake Michigan.

There is a lot to see in Frankfort, Michigan and they have a wonderful bike trail there. We visited the old coast gard center which is being converted to a new art center.

It is cherry season in Michigan right now. The season is late this year. I put some sweet Michigan cherries on the top of my cupcakes as I ate some nice fresh ones, always good to eat.

Tvedten Fine Art

Tvedten Fine Art Gallery holds an invitational event every year in August. The date of the paint out for the Wet Paint Fresh Ink is Saturday Aug 8 2009. The opening reception is 6:30-8:30. The Little Travers Conservancy will recieve 20% of the sales from the paintout.

This painting I started the day of the paintout but I got rained out just before I finished it. I went back to my room and finished it the next day.

Paint out 2009 Petosky Michigan

There will be artists painting all around Petoskey on Saturday August 1, 2009 for Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Fourth Annual Paint-Out.
Beginning at 8 a.m. artists will gather to have canvases or paper stamped to verify that the material they will be painting on was blank in the morning of the paint-out.
I will be there again this year bright and early for the annual paint out.

They will then venture anywhere in the Petosky area to begin a day of plein air painting. As the sun moves across the sky, artists will be painting and capturing a day in the life of northern Michigan on canvas. The completed artwork must be returned framed and ready to hang between 4-6 p.m. that same day.

At 6 p.m. there will be a wine and cheese reception celebrating all of the work created that day.

All work will be for sale and work will be on display until August 30th. If you can't make the reception on Saturaday and meet a wonderful group of artist from the US but will be in the area later stop in and see the wonderful plien air paintings.

This paint-out is a great way to join artists with the community and celebrate the beauty and talent of this region.

North Carolina

I have been traveling and painting again. I love North Carolina. A state rich in history it was first attempted to be colonized by the Spanish and then later the British. North Carolina,as a plantation state had a long history of slavery.

Yesterday I traveled to Raleigh , the capital of the state and a city know for it lovely oaks. The park in the down town area boasts a large sculpture of an acorn. While I was in Raleigh I visited "Art Space. The building houses 28 working artist along with exhibitions and education class' in the arts taught by the residence artist.

The minute I walked into Art Space I thought of the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria Virginia that I toured last year. Art Space is much smaller having 28 working artist where the Torpedo Factory has 82 working artist the feel is similar. I spoke to some of the artist there and they said that, yes it had been modeled after the torpedo factory. If I were an artist in the area I would want to be in this space the artistic juice was flowing here.

If you visit Raleigh the Art Space is a must see and while you are there stop and see the gallery of watercolorists Nancy Meadow Taylor.

Rules for Students and Teachers." Here they are:

1 Find a place you trust, and then try trusting it for awhile.

2 General duties of a student--pull everything out of your teacher; pull everything out of your fellow students.

3 General duties of a teacher--pull everything out of your students.

4 Consider everything an experiment.

5 Be self-disciplined--this means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.

6 Nothing is a mistake. There's no win and no fail, there's only make.

7 The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It's the people who do all of the work all of the time who eventually catch on to things.

8 Don't try to create and analyze at the same time. They're different processes.

9 Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It's lighter than you think.

10 Break rules. Even your own rules. Leave plenty of room for X quantities.

John Cage (1912-1992) was a composer, print maker, performance artist, writer, philosopher, editor, teacher, mushroom expert, collaborator and poet. Fact is, John Cage had a lot of fun . Considered one of the most influential composers of the twentieth century, he produced works with one note, no notes, notes by chance, and a noted organ composition that takes 639 years to play.

Thinking about the life and "happenings" of John Cage, it's not difficult to see that joy, imagination and brilliance flow from work.
