Create the Magic

When I am in a very creative mood I am totally lost in the moment. I am a constant state of becoming. It's not the colors I'm using, Its not the brushes, it's not triple primed canvas, that is the easy stuff. To be truly creative you have to
1. Show up, this is totally number one.
2. Capture your feelings, your mood, put it all down.
Everyday is different everyday offers different ways of expressing yourself ,so just do it. Create the Magic.

Selling your art

Selling you art.
You have made this wonderful work of art and you want to be able to sell it. For those of us who are making a living by selling our art this is always a question we ask ourselves. Sure we sell some but how do we sell more. How do we get higher prices for our wonderful works of art. Is there a better way to get noticed

You are an artist, but that doesn’t mean that you know how to sell your work. In fact most artists really struggle with sales and marketing and face consistent disappointment. I know I'm one of them.

It has taken me lots of tries and failures, being an artist is not for those who have thin skin.

Today there are many places you can sell you art.

1. Galleries: this is the hardest place to start but you can but you have to be out there everyday approaching gallery owners. Most galleries have very limited space so they want to make the most of that space with proven artist.

2. Consignment and Co Op galleries

On Line:

1. Your Web Site
2.Your Blog
3.Ebay
4.Etsy
5.Daily Paint Works
6. Fine Art America
7 Amazon
So many more I could go on for a long time with the list. Ask other artist where they sell.

The good old place where most artist today started
1. Art Fairs
2. Art Exhibitions
3. Plein Air Events

I will go into these selling venues in more detail later. What I am really trying to say is " If  you want to sell your art work get in front of as many people as you can.

What to do when self doubt hits you as an artist.

A Day in the life of am artist: Some days you wake up just full of ideas and can not wait to get the studio, but what about the days when you feel like a failure and have tons of self doubt? We all have days like that. It doesn't mean anything it is your mind trying to work out problems. You must keep going keep painting.

I keep a little note book where I have 10 ideas for each of the 31 days that could be in a month. If I have one of those dull gray days in my head I pick up the book take one of the idea and run with it. It doesn't matter if I feel like painting that idea I just do it. I get moving I become the object in motion.

My ideas are simple in the book just one or two words to leave lots of room for inspiration and imagination.

Here are the ones I have for today if I should need them:
 1. Crow
 2.figurative
 3.seasons
4.Still Life
5.Bike
6.Cup
7. Long legged birds
8. Cow
9.Palette Knife
 10. Transportation

So as you can see ; when you start to doubt yourself just keep moving. I suggest that today you get a small notebook and number off 31 pages putting 1-10 on each page and as ideas come to you write them down. When you hit one of those self doubt days where you just don't feel that anyone cares about your art, get your brushes out go to your happy place and paint. Just stick to it.

Imagination and the creative mind

"Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world." (Albert Einstein)

Life sometimes gets in the way. You have all these ideas on what will come next in your art, then there is a knock at the door, the washing machine breaks, the weeds are knee deep in the flower beds and you put your art on hold why get stuff done. It has been dark for hours now you want head to the studio but gee whiz the energy is gone and you need a hot bath.

That was me this week as I wanted to needed to dive in with brash and paint on my latest project. It is beet just to keep working and stop worrying it will come I tell myself.

This is where I left off last week the slow start but a beginning.

Last night I painted a base color for the sky it has a long way to go before it is complete. I want to add clouds and give it more character.
.I need to get background in before I can paint my animals. Once I have the color around the animals completed I can better judge what values I will need when painting them. I will do more tonight. I know there is a painting hiding in that canvas.I want to see as soon as possible.

Inspire an emotional reaction in people with your art

Today I am starting a new large work 30x40. That is large for me because I now sell mostly on the internet and I like to keep work small for easy shipping. Also I find small work takes very little storage space. That is something to consider when you paint. Now if you are one of those very lucky artist who sells everything you paint,I bow to you.
I stared at this blank canvas for a month, this is not like me I usually have all kings of ideas, not this time ! I did sketch after sketch and then I finally thought I had it. I did a quick watercolor to get a feel for it. It was a good idea and an interesting painting salable but not what I was looking for. So I kept on this is the really hard part for me.I want to paint something that draws you in makes you stop and look and has that WOW factor .

Finally bush to canvas,an idea is taking seed.
Getting things sketched in. This can be changed as I work on it, but something on canvas at last.

I will be post daily as I work on this painting.

Painting an aceo in oils

When painting these very small oil paintings I have found that putting a cloths pin above and below seems to hold them in place while I paint. In the past I have put tape on the back but I like using the cloths pins best. I can keep the painting at eye level and work from my palette. If you paint aceos in oils let me know how you work with them I would love to hear from you.

Backgrounds

For most paintings, regardless of subject matter or media, it’s essential to consider the background as part of the composition. Even if you decide to just leave empty space around your image, then you're still creating a background.

I have started a large 24x48 inch painting and have benn trying to work out the details. I have been going over ideas for about a month now and have just starting placing images, I have lightly sketch the placement of the images.I think the back ground will be very dark. This is a whimsical oil painting.

Here is the start.

The light pencil drawing is easy to remove and try something else.
