Marketing art can be a huge challenge.

How do you get your art in front of people who will not only love it, but want to buy it as well? Should you invest in magazine ads? Participate in art festivals? Show your work in a local gallery? Strange Habits of Highly Creative People

According to Harvard psychologist Shelley Carson, eccentric people tend to be more creative because of something called "cognitive dis-inhibition.

Getting up early was a habit and a ”must” of Ernest Hemingway and Marcel Proust, Beethoven was drinking dozens of cups of coffee a day, and Benjamin Franklin had his ritual of ”air-bath” in front of an open window while V.S. Pritchett adored a glass of martini with his lunch. All modern analysis and researches,done on this matter did not lead to a ritual or weird habits that would be common for all those great minds, but they did discover that majority of them had some sort of eccentric habit or rule.

Albert Einstein picked up cigarette butts off the street to get tobacco for his pipe.

"Basically, creative folks have less of a filter on their thoughts and actions, which makes them more likely to do things that don’t follow the norms of behavior.

Francis Bacon, a British artist who painted gruesome and intense portraits, lived the high life. Bottles of wine, beers at the pub, and drinks at private clubs were a daily routine. Interestingly, all the imbibing and hard living helped his creativity.

The Elements of Design -LINE

The elements of design: LINE
A line Actual or implied creates a boundary ,defines an edge or indicates a direction.

Characteristic of Line are: Width - thick, thin, tapering, uneven Length - long, short, continuous, broken Direction- horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curving, perpendicular, oblique, parallel, radial, zigzag Focus- sharp, blurry, fuzzy, choppy Feeling- sharp, jagged, graceful, smooth

Types of Line:
Outlines- Lines made by the edge of an object or its silhouette.
Contour Lines- Lines that describe the shape of an object and the interior detail. Gesture Lines- Lines that are energetic and catch the movement and gestures of an active figure. Sketch Lines- Lines that capture the appearance of an object or impression of a place.
Calligraphic Lines- Greek word meaning "beautiful writing." Precise, elegant handwriting or lettering done by hand. Also artwork that has flowing lines like an elegant handwriting.
Implied Line- Lines not actually drawn but created by a group of objects seen from a distance. Implied line is the direction an object is pointing to, or the direction a person is looking at. ( I like this one a lot)

An implied line is one that the viewer imagines. Value, Shapes and Color can create lines.

Light and Shade the Elements of Design

Writing has laws of perspective, of light and shade just as painting does, or music. If you are born knowing them, fine. If not, learn them. Then rearrange the rules to suit yourself. Truman Capote

Value: Refers to the light and darkness of a tone.

A lot of us use the terms hue, tint, tone and shade when referring to color in art, but did you know each of these terms has a very specific meaning? For a painter, knowing the difference between them all is important when communicating concepts in your painting.

Tones are created when you add both black and white to a hue.
Value contrast refers to the difference in value between one tone and another, Black and white represent the extreme of in value contrast with the varying shades of gray in the middle.

Adding black to a color will darken it. This is caller a shade. Adding white to the same color will lighten it , this is called a tint.

If you slightly squint your eyes, you will see that at least 2 and possibly 3 values of color make up any object in the natural world. Practice creating entire paintings with no more than 3 values on any object. Paint a few of those and you'll discern a rhythm between areas of 1, 2 and 3 values. It's a fun game.

The elements of design are building blocks to develop your painting. The basics are: Value,color,shape,line,and texture. All painters deal with these elements.

When you have finished your painting check the elements. Could the art be improved by push one of these elements more? Develop an exit check list to see if you have used this design elements.

Art is an Event

Move your painting to the next level

Dissatisfaction is the first step toward moving to a higher level.

You get your intuition back when you make space for it, when you stop the chattering of the rational mind. The rational mind doesn't nourish you. You assume that it gives you the truth, because the rational mind is the golden calf that this culture worships, but this is not true. Rationality squeezes out much that is rich and juicy and fascinating.”

Making quantum leaps in our progress as painters is critically important.
Remaining stagnant is not an option. But quantum leaps don't usually occur on their own. Great painters recognize when they are in a rut and intentionally place themselves in an environment that challenges them and forces them to try new things. ultimately, growth as an artist comes once you break out of your comfort zone to a place you feel free, a little uncomfortable, and suddenly reinvigorated about your work.

▢ 1. Know that dissatisfaction is a blessing. Reaching a level of unhappiness with your work is a sure-fire way to be on the lookout for change. Embrace your dissatisfaction.

▢ 2. Immerse yourself in the work of great masters. Go to the museums and study their works. Stare. Paint their paintings in your mind from start to finish. Try to figure out how they made every brushstroke. Their breakthroughs will register in your mind and will help you make your own breakthroughs.

▢ 3. Paint feverishly. The worst thing you can do is stop. Instead, ramp up your painting time. Stop thinking and start painting intuitively. Stop judging yourself. Just paint, experiment, and challenge yourself.

▢ 4. Confuse your brain with multiple mentors. Though others will tell you this is the worst thing you can do, it's the best road to finding your own breakthrough. Following a single mentor is a great road to becoming a clone. Study with different people in an environment where your brain can get constant stimulation with lots of painters at the same time. Even the most experienced painters study other painters in order to stimulate brain activity and increase their knowledge. "

What is the best advice you have ever been given about painting?

What is the best advice you’ve ever been given about your painting?

1.Drawing: Using simple strokes with a brush,

2. Underpainting: I determine the basic value design. I mix transparent red oxide and ultramarine blue for darks and show general shapes of the dark, light, and midtones in a transparent underpainting.

3.Value and Opacity: I start to introduce opacity. I mix grays, cover the light area, and keep the dark area transparent. I’m still ignoring color and am now paying attention only to value .

4. Color Temperature and Relationships:I pay attention only to color relationships, not to the detail of the shapes.

Using passwords like these will significantly increase your risk of identity and other theft. password (Most popular and easily hacked.)

Tips for making more secure passwords:

Include punctuation marks and/or numbers.
Mix capital and lowercase letters.

Include similar looking substitutions, such as the number zero for the letter 'O' or '$' for the letter 'S'.
Create a unique acronym.
Include phonetic replacements, such as 'Luv2Laf' for 'Love to Laugh'.

Don't: Don't reuse passwords for multiple important accounts, such as Gmail and online banking.

Don't use a password that is listed as an example of how to pick a good password.

Don't use a password that contains personal information (name, birth date, etc.)

Don't use words or acronyms that can be found in a dictionary.

Don't use keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234).

Don't make your password all numbers, uppercase letters or lowercase letters.

Don't use repeating characters (aa11).

Tips for keeping your password secure: Never tell your password to anyone (this includes significant others, roommates, parrots, etc.).

* Never send your password (or your credit card or bank account info) by email. Sounds obvious, but if I had a dollar for every time someone did this, well, I'd have lot of extra cash.

Email is not secure. It's like writing your passwords on the back of a postcard and mailing it.

Periodically test your current password and change it to a new one, at least four times a year.

Don't let your computer "remember" your passwords. Yeah, I know it's easier than remembering them, but you don't want that info stored where someone (other than you) can get at it.

* About the "don't write them down or tell them to anyone" part: I have so many passwords that I can't possibly remember them all, so I keep them in a password-protected file. Of course, I made the password to that file especially difficult and named the file with something that has nothing to do with passwords (I didn't call it "Passwords").

Memorial Day Tip

And one of the ways we fuel our dreams and empower the future is by "borrowing" confidence from the past. Celebrate your past achievements and use them to know, deep inside, that you can boldly go wherever your wish in the future. Go climb some big mountains! Paint a painting that you have been thinking about.

As I often do, I want to remind you to enjoy nature this weekend. Go for a hike, watch the flowers grow, fly a kite or have a barbeque, and enjoy the changing seasons. This is your life--enjoy it!
Liberty and democracy are fragile things and they do not flourish by themselves. They require loving care and costly sacrifice by those who cherish them. Every day, liberty is under attack by those who would censor our words, our thoughts and our prayers. 1. You upload a good quality photo of your artwork to the print on demand website.

2. You set the prices and options for your prints and the company adds their costs and markups.

3. A buyer purchases a print of your work from the website in any of the print options available. eg. paper, canvas wrap, acrylic print, postcards, etc.

4. The print company automatically produces the order and delivers it to the buyer.

5. The print company pays you at the end of the month for your sales. Fineartamerica.com

One way to clean your brushes and smell like a Baby

I clean my brush with turp then swish the in baby oil smell so good. Then I just give the a swish in turp in the morning and we are ready to rock and roll.

How to Grow Your Art Businness

All Artist know, there really isn't enough time in the day to do everything.

There's creating of the paintings (thumbnails, concepts to work out, study of the material for your painting, actual time to paint), marketing of yourself to sell your paintings, shipping of paintings, contacting galleries, contacting clients, finding new clients, sending out newsletters, doing studies, etc... a thousand little things to do.

It can get overwhelming at time. The more pressure that you put on yourself, the more stress that you are going to feel.
But despite the hubbub and distractions, the conflicting goals and shifting priorities, I’m finding it really does get easier.

What is glazing an oil painting all about?

What is glazing?

Glazing is the application of one or more thin, transparent (or nearly transparent) layers of paint over another color. The lower layer must be dry so that the colors do not mix physically. Light passes through the glaze, reflects off of the opaque layer below it, and then is reflected back through the glaze to the observer's eye, modifying the color in the process. For example, a blue glaze applied over a yellow will modify the yellow toward green. Glazing always results in a darker color than the original.

Genius Power Magic

It is difficult to convince yourself to work constantly when the world ignores you. I would estimate that 90% of artists faded away.

The recipe for success is simple-- make art, show it wherever you can (galleries, alternative or non-gallery venues, and especially online), pay attention to how people react, particularly those who either buy or come close to buying, and gain insight into that mysterious time interval between the moment you first expose a work of art in public and the moment someone pays you to own it.

Over time, all kinds of artists develop and perfect all kinds of strategies for how to play this time interval to the max, how to attract buyers, sidle up to people with profiles in the art world, and tilt their prognoses towards success.

So let's take a look at some of these strategies, and see whether or not they'll work for you.

The first one is easy, all you have to do is think! Take 5 minutes to consider what your goals are for your artwork.

Are you just doing it for fun because you love it,
Do you plan to make a living from doing it, or is it a bit of both?

Where do you see yourself and your artwork in a years time? How about 5 years?

The benefit of establishing your artistic goals is that it gives you something to focus on, so that you can take action to fulfill your goals.

Think about what action you can do today that will get you one step closer to your artistic goals.

So back to the original of question of what to do when nothing happens. Be prepared and make a decision early on how you will judge your progress. Ignore the world of commercial art and focus on something that resonates with you.

Review: Movie review Noah

I usually discuss things about painting and drawing life. I now am adding review s of some of the art exhibitions I go to, movies I see,books I read, and art materials I use. As artist we need to exposes ourselves to as much of the art as we can.

Remember this is just my opinion so feel free to give me your take on things also.

The first review is of a movie I saw a few weeks ago. I really wanted to see this movie. I don't got to a lot of movies but I made the effort to see the one on the big screen. It had two of my favorite actors in it : New Zealand born Australian actor Russell Crow and the very versatile Welsh actor Anthony Hopkins in the movie Noah. Now the story comes from one of the all time most read books in the world the Bible, how could the movie be anything but epic?

Wow the movie industry took great actor a wonderful story and turned into cinematic trash. With cartoon rock creature and just pure writing hacks so disappointing. I give this movie a thumbs and down and would not even rent it.

The best thing you will see is the trailer clips.

How t become a successful Painter

1. Paint.
Yep you got it get those brushes out and get to work.

2. Put your first stroke down and move on with another stroke. Work your strokes and let your strokes work you.

Don't lick them down think before yo paint the first stroke.

3. Stop the painting before you think you should.

Oh that is so hard, just one more tweak, yep and you get a really over work painting. I see them all the time.

4. Put your painting aside and start another painting.
I keep about 4 going at all times. This give me time to think and work out problems in my head then approach the paint wit fresh eyes.

If you can't work on more then one painting at a time take breaks every hour, then take a fresh look at your work.

5. Always keep in mind that you are your own best critic.
Is it a meaningful subject
Lost and Found objects
Focal Point
Over all Simplification
Visual Depth
I am sure you have your own list of check points.

6. Never knowing leave anything wrong on your canvas. Perfection in painting is probably not possible but your work reflect you so stay engaged. Have confidence self doubt is a killer.

7. No matter how skillful you become painting never get easy.Your style is what you're doing academically wrong. Nothing will mess up you painting quicker then thinking you don't have what it takes. Your work is a reflection of yourself -- you only have one life to show you've got style.

8. You need to paint with enough assurance and confidence to know you can do whatever you like. So paint your story and make painting your life. Be honest with yourself about your progress. Always try to do a better job than you did the day before. Remember painters come in all sizes and shapes,sex,race,and age do not matter. Art is your voice the song of your heart

What's Your Style?

Hobbyist, Amateur, or Professional Artist it doesn't matter which you are as long as you are having fun.

Thinking about your personal style when determining painting

is crucial to your own self expression and painting identity.

You may love loose brush strokes and a tight composition while your

friend might love tight brush strokes with an impressionistic

composition. Both are great, that's what makes painting so great! There's no right

or wrong when doing it!

No matter your style, practice, patience, and attention while painting will

benefit any painter with any painting style.

Watch the way I paint, I practice and experiment with my brushstrokes

and use of paint.It is my style.

Experiment and find your own style.

If you already know what style you want to accomplish, Then just practice

in experimentation.

Sometimes its difficult to know what style we want to embody ,without

experimentation within ourselves and our techniques it is hard to find it

so be bold and experiment.

So get to painting and try something new!

Tip of the Month

How strong is your creative energy today? What activity would most raise your credibility, visibility or desirability? Who is expecting you to deliver on a promise within the next week?

Each day we all have only so much time and some days even less energy, so pick the thing that will give you the biggest bang for the time and energy that you have. Always have work in progress that you can work on for an hour or two if time is limited. Work on sketches for your next project if you just don't have time to get the paints out.

Plan your work and work your plan. I find the hardest thing is just starting the second hardest thing is stopping once I am in the moment.

About This Painting: About five years ago I started a series of paintings called organic vegetables paintings and roots in watercolors and oils. Most of the work has been sold and I think I am ready to start painting roots in a new way. Work in Progress

I have been working on the large fish painting, one fish at a time.

I have been picking just one fish an working on that area. This weeks I started with this fish.

I added some more color to the base.

I started adding more layers of color.

This little fish is starting to have some visual texture.

I got this far and now have to wait and let this area dry before I can add more glazing to it.

Now it's time to move on to another fish.
