The Business of Art

Scott Fox always has great information. I have read both of his books and he is great. I think he really has some great advice and one of my favorite words some of it is free.

How to Build an Email List – 7 "Cs" to Supercharge Your List Building

How to build an email list challenges everyone new to online marketing.

Learning what to publish to attract subscribers and generate Word of Mouth is tough.

To help you along the path, in this email marketing success video I share my "7 C's".

How to Build an Email List – My 7 "Cs" Basics of Successful Email List-building

1. Collectors: You must prominently display the signup for your noozles if you want people to sign up. This should be automated using email service providers like Aweber, Feedblitz, Constant Contact, MailChimp, etc.

2. Content: To attract subscribers you must offer valuable content (not just promote your own products).

3. Curate: You don't have to write all your email content yourself. Instead you can find and select the best stuff in your field from around the web for sharing. (This also draws attention to your list from bigger players and potential promotional partners (two fer!).

4. Coupons & Contests: To convince people to sign up for your email list, bribery is definitely an option. Incentives like discounts, ebooks, and access to exclusive information can help a lot.

5. Customer Case Studies: Talking about your customers both demonstrates how to actually use your products/services successfully, plus it makes your best customers feel important. (another two-fer!)

6. Concise: Everybody is in a hurry these days. Keep your content short to increase its appeal.

7. Controversy to Attract Comments: Getting people talking – whether its by forwarding your emails, Tweeting, "liking" it on Facebook, or commenting on your blog - is good publicity.
I hope those 7 "Cs" are helpful to your email list-building.

Women are Superior, well maybe

Women are apparently superior in how they see colour.

At least that is what X-Rite (the people who supply Munsell colour products), have found ;1 out of 255 women and 1 out of 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency.

They've provided a free colour test online that you can access here. Give a try if you want to burn a little studio time before getting back to the canvas. Take this test and then leave your results in the comments.  (Please include your gender--apparently there are some men named Susan, or Leslie , stuff like that) .

So lets see if chicks really do rule, at least where colour are concerned.

Fail often in order to succeed sooner

In Peter Sims' book, Little Bets:

How Breakthrough Ideas Emerge from Small Discoveries, we see the value of making lots of small failures as a way to get to large successes. While Peter's book is mainly aimed at entrepreneurs, it's also of real value to us regular creative types. These days, cutting-edge gurus are passing the word around: "Fail often in order to succeed sooner."

I have been painting a lot of fish paintings lately testing. Trying to work out how I want that large ArtPrize painting to look. Practicing on small elements working out ideas. The subject is new for me so it is taking a lot of trial and tons of errors but I feel that it is time well spent as  I am getting a little better with each try.

Walk don't Run and carry a pencil

I run in the morning. I run anywhere from 3-7 mile it depends on the weather and the day of the week. Now I just read this about walking on Robert Genn Twice-Weekly Letter , maybe I should walk more.Really slow down and smell the flowers, but I love to run.

Robert says,"Walking briskly, pushing the blood to your extremities, alone and with minimal distraction along the path, concentrating the mind on the thighs' movements, you trigger imagination and focus. In other words, brisk walking is a form of creative meditation."

You need a notebook to scrawl the thoughts as they come. After the walk, you need to reassess your scrawls.
The ability to focus is challenged in our society--not just with the nerve-jangled adults but also with the new batch of kids.

Richard Davidson, a psychologist known for his behavioral research with Rhesus monkeys and studies in meditation with the Dali Lama, has made some interesting discoveries. Children (some of them with learning disorders) were invited to lie on their backs with a pebble placed on their tummies. While deep breathing, they were to focus on the pebble going up and down. After this exercise and for a period of time, they enthusiastically concentrated on schoolwork and other tasks.
I haven't tried watching pebbles going up and down on my tummy, but I sometimes look down at the movement of my feet while walking. It induces a lovely trance. I don't recommend doing it in traffic.

I have watched the pool of water in my belly button as I relax in a warm tub. You can see your heart beat move the ripples, very relaxing.
Brisk walking removes dark clouds, refreshes the artistic mind, encourages the interbreeding of thoughts, and plucks new ideas out of the blue.

Walking itself is a time-honoured path to spirituality (think Camino de Santiago across northern Spain). There can be no doubt walking stimulates the imagination.

Walking is a readily available antidote to a sedentary life. Different artists get different results. Mine are all over the place.

When I get back I journal and review my walk notes.
With the brisk walk, you make up your mind. It's as if someone is walking along with you, helping you with your thinking. No matter how long the walk, the best stuff comes during the second half. You may find the last minute is spent running to the studio.

So walk don't run and carry a note book. Now when I don my cool down I will carry a note pad and enjoy the afterglow.
