Paint out 2009 Petosky Michigan

There will be artists painting all around Petoskey on Saturday August 1, 2009 for Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Fourth Annual Paint-Out.
Beginning at 8 a.m. artists will gather to have canvases or paper stamped to verify that the material they will be painting on was blank in the morning of the paint-out.
I will be there again this year bright and early for the annual paint out.

They will then venture anywhere in the Petosky area to begin a day of plein air painting. As the sun moves across the sky, artists will be painting and capturing a day in the life of northern Michigan on canvas. The completed artwork must be returned framed and ready to hang between 4-6 p.m. that same day.

At 6 p.m. there will be a wine and cheese reception celebrating all of the work created that day.

All work will be for sale and work will be on display until August 30th. If you can't make the reception on Saturaday and meet a wonderful group of artist from the US but will be in the area later stop in and see the wonderful plien air paintings.

This paint-out is a great way to join artists with the community and celebrate the beauty and talent of this region.

Cows in the Pasture No 3

When I was a kid on the farm July and August were hay baling time. Always on the hottest day of the year we would cut and bale the hay because it had to be dry. Moisture in the bails would cause heat which after being put in the barn could make the hay catch on fire. I had an uncle who had bales do that and almost burnt down his barn.

When I was a kid the bales were square now most hay bales are big and round. I like the round bales, they don't have to be loaded on wagon and taken into the barn like the old square bales that I remember. My job as a kid was unloading the wagons and putting the hay unto the elevator that took the bails up to the top of the barn where they were stored for use in the winter. Nice memories but so glad I don't have to do the work any more. Its much more enjoyable just to paint them.

Just Peachy

For those of you who know me, you know I live on ice cream and there is nothing like fresh peach ice cream.

Peach Ice Cream
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 cups milk
4 eggs, beaten
2 tablespoons vanilla
4 cups whipping cream
2 1/2 cups crushed or pureed peaches, sweetened to taste

Preparation:Combine sugar, cornstarch, and salt in top of double boiler; gradually blend in milk. Cook over hot water, stirring occasionally, for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until thickened. Stir a small amount of the hot mixture into the beaten eggs, then return egg mixture to pan with remaining hot mixture. Cook over hot water, stirring constantly, for 4 to 5 minutes, until it is about as thick as pudding. Chill thoroughly, about 3 hours. Stir vanilla and cream into the chilled mixture. Pour into a 1-gallon ice cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer's directions. Remove dasher and stir in crushed or pureed sweetened peaches; repack ice cream freezer with 1 part rock salt to 6 parts crushed ice and let ripen for 2 hours.

Sunshine Fruit

Sunshine Fruit
Sunshine Fruit, painting by Delilah Smith

About This Painting:

Habits reap favorable results. It seems that simple habits contribute more to success than luck, happenstance, or even a favoring economy. As artists, we need to regularly refresh the habit of truly looking, truly seeing and truly understanding. Its not a big deal. It's just a habit.

Recent studies on the nature of genius indicate that self-generated habits are mighty muscles indeed. While all of us who wish to master specific skills need to tailor our habits accordingly, here are a few for starters: Squeeze out paint in the morning before your coffee is cold.Program creative work balanced with rest, exercise and study. Train yourself to be regular, punctual and workmanlike.Shoot down your lazy tendencies before they shoot you.

Habits, It seems contribute more to success than luck, happenstance, or even the economy.

The Ann Arbor Art Fair has started here in Michigan it runs from July 15-18 so if you have stopped in to view hundreds of the best artist in the US it is time to make the trip.

There is live music so you can take a break rest your feet and hear some wonderful bands play in the shade of the tent.

Or if you would rather hear the music from these sculptures. There is lots to see and hear.

Or if you like your sculptures live this one was so interest to watch. He would blow you a kiss if you tipped him. ( the only time he moved.)

There was a little wind on Wednesday when I visited the fair so these wonderful wind sculptures were in their glory.

Take the time to visit you will be glad you did.

Morning Glories

Morning Glories flowers open only during the morning and then fade by early afternoon, but there are an abundance of buds ready to open on each successive morning over many days. I feel like a Morning Glory somedays, up bright a cherrful then fadeing with not much energy left by the end of the day.

Inspiration

When the Rose is Faded by Walter de la Mare
When the rose is faded, Memory may still dwell on Her beauty shadowed, And the sweet smell gone. That vanishing loveliness, That burdening breath, No bond of life hath then, Nor grief of death. 'Tis the immortal thought Whose passion still Makes the changing The unchangeable. Oh, thus thy beauty, Loveliest on earth to me, Dark with no sorrow, shines And burns, with thee.
