Observing to become a better artist. Observing,really looking on daily basis is one of the element to becomeing a better artist. Put yourself in that Zen like state of observation.

( Zen teaches that the potential to achieve enlightenment is inherent in everyone but lies dormant because of ignorance. It is best awakened by breaking through the boundaries of mundane logical thought. )

So start thinking outside the box.

Zen and the artist
When you really get yourself completely into your art, when you completely focus the creative aspect starts to loosen up.

You start to become completely absorbed in the action of painting and you thnk of nothing else.

Painting as a form of Meditation

In way painting is a way to meditate. When you are in your Zen , you are focused you are observing,really looking, you are complete in your observation of the image and nothing else matters.

Self-directed Evolution

Setting Goals for 2011

I decided that this woud be the year of Self-directed Evolution. I try to find a buzz work to keep me going each year to push me a little. I like this one.

We are gradually influenced, every single day, by a thousand small shifts that come into our
lives.

By decideing where you would like to be in 52 weeks self directed, you can make decission that will help you get there quicker.

I am convinced that we are influenced far more than we know by our environment . I know I watch to much TV and have not been reading enough. I also know I read more than 99% of the US population. scary to think how many people let other direct them. The things we think about do shape our lives.The way we talk to outselves make a difference. I am great for talking to my self to my paintings to the cat, for the cat, now I make it positive. I change the adjective and adverbs to be uplifting and exploritative.

One of my resolution this year is to run everyday, weather permitting. I have decided that I will listen to audio books while I run, doing what wemon do best multi tasking.

I hope you will be just as thoughtful about the "little things" that influence you more quietly, the things that fill your environment with hidden or subtle messages.

Choose the radio station in your car. Choose the books on your coffee table. Choose the shows and movies you watch. Chosse the words that you talk to yourself with.Choose the artwork that you look at everyday.You noticed I said choose because it is alway up to you.

Think
Think about the people you associate with and listen to their words with a "third ear" that scrutinizes everything and asks, "Is this good for me?" Your life will be shaped in powerful ways by the "stuff"
that surrounds you every day, all year long. Choose well!

The Balancing Act

If you are like me you have to balance so many things at one time it becomes hard to focus on what is the most important.

I need to really focus on improving my art. I also want to take my career into my own hands. This means that I needed to spend a considerable amount of time marketing.

So I have to get better at reducing the busy work that is not productive.Eliminate the time wasters and focus on the tasks that will get you to your goals.

Instead of trying to sell and market to everyone,I must begin to focus
on a very specific audience. My target audience.

By focusing on a specific audience, I'll be much more likely to
figure out what that audience wants and understand how I can
best serve them.

Once I know how to serve my audience really well, I can use
that knowledge and understanding to expand.

Now I can really focus on what is important to me improving my art.

Art and Dragonflies

I like the whimsical charater of Dragonflies and add them to my art. It's just one of the ways I set my paintings up to add something different and un expected for the viewer.

With many artists vying for the same few spots at galleries or exhibition spaces, the “competition” for exposure can be difficult and disheartening. Unpersonalized rejections, lack of feedback, or unresponsiveness from galleries can lead artists to take drastic measures to stand out from the crowd. 10 Facts on Dragonflies:
1. There are about 5,000 different kinds of dragonflies. 400 of them live in the U.S.

2. When you see two dragonflies chasing each other, it is usually two males fighting to flee the other from the territory. Dragonflies are very territorial.

3. When you see two dragonflies attached, flying, most likely it is a male and female mating.

4. Male dragonfly's penises are shaped like a shovel at the end so it can scoop out any "additions" to the female, by another male dragonfly. (another territorial issue... Apparently, he doesn't like to share!)

5. Dragonflies were here on earth before the dinasaurs were! They haven't changed much since then, besides they are MUCH smaller!

6. The largest wing span ever recorded on a dragonfly is two and a half feet! (It was a fossil)

7.Dragonflies are very curious creatures, but they will not harm a human one bit. They may fly around your head, or even land on you, but they will never sting or bite.

8. Because of their large multifaceted eyes, the adult dragonfly can see just about 360 degrees around themselves without moving their head!

9. A dragonfly's eyes hold thousands of lenses. Humans only have one. (hmm..)

10. A dragonfly was once clocked at 55 mph!

How to Screw Up Your Art Show

I consider Jack to be a friend of mine even though I have never meant him in person. We have exchanged several emails and I have bought several of his E-books. When you start reading some of his advice it is like you become a close personal friend. This is what we all should strive to do with out emails and blogs. If you are not Familar with Jack Whites writings here is some solid advice, worth reading.

This could cause you to experience high blood pressure and hot flashes when you realize some of the glaring mistakes you may have made doing shows. By shows, I’m talking about outdoor tent shows, festivals, and indoor booth or mall shows.

The first show I did was Laguna Gloria, a big time event in Austin. The committee placed me in the very back, down by the smelly port-a-potties. I was given the worst location in the show. The lady in charge of the committee was upset someone allowed my trash in.

Right after I set up my booth, a couple of well-dressed men stopped by to chat. It was 8:00 AM, but these guys were already drinking Lone Star long necks. After we talked awhile one said, “They stuck you down here by the toilets. No one is going to find you. Joe and I will see what we can do.”

Suddenly, the two had doubled their agents a couple of times. The next thing I knew, I had eight men hauling people to my tent. They were all prominent young lawyers who knew everyone in Austin. (1970 Population 75,000) By 3PM I sold out. I went to my studio for another load of art, while my “agents” stood watch. By dark, with their help, I had sold the second batch. For inventory on Sunday, I emptied my studio; an hour after church my booth was empty again. I had people buying 8 to 10 pieces. I was selling my gold leaf art. No one had ever sold that amount of art before and I’m sure not since. My agents were determined that everyone at the show found me. I took all eight of them to Dirty Martin’s for a big, greasy burger.

The irony is Laguna Gloria never allowed me to show again until six years later when the Mayor of Austin, Jeffery Friedman, gave me the key to the city. He asked where I’d like him to make the presentation. I smiled, then said, “Where else but Laguna Gloria!” The committee who turned me down was now sucking up like I was movie star. I have never been treated so special. They kept saying, “We always knew you would be famous.”

I didn’t do any more shows of that nature until after I switched to oils. For the gold leaf, I starting doing shows in bank lobbies. I set up in all the major banks in Texas, like the big Frost Bank in San Antonio, the First National Bank in Houston, Fort Worth, Dallas, Lubbock, Tyler, Amarillo, El Paso and at least 250 smaller banks. I perfected fast, low pressure selling. Not bragging, just a fact.

After I began painting in oils and the Oil, Savings and Loan, and Livestock industries crashed in the 80's, unemployment reached 20 percent in parts of Texas. I purchased an Airstream trailer and headed to Florida. For the next two years I worked all kinds of shows in Florida and California. I became an expert on how to be successful at mall and tent shows.

Since those days, I have made a hobby of studying shows. Mikki and I go to all the shows we can. When we lived in Florida, we went to a lot of shows. When we moved to Carefree, Arizona we visited eight to ten on weekends during the season. I began to keep notes on the mistakes artists were making.

After reading this article ,you will never look at art shows the same way. I’m going to transform your thinking.

When I was doing shows, I started out with blank canvases. I painted my entire inventory at the show. I was working shows every week; therefore there was no time to build an inventory. I sold all of my oils wet and put the smaller pieces in pizza boxes. I would paint a 30” x 40” in less than an hour. I attached the larger canvases to a sheet of cardboard. I put four screw eyes in the stretcher bars on the back, one on each corner, pushed them through the cardboard and slipped a nail through the screw eye to hold the canvas secure. This allowed folks to carry the art home without getting oils on their clothes.

People were mesmerized with my use of 4” house paintbrushes to paint the background. I used #14 and #18 filbert bristles for all but the signature and catch lights in the eyes. Big brushes, with bold strokes, painted at lightening speed. I used an old-fashioned arm palette, patterned after a master painter, Wyman Adams. In addition, I had a stack of unframed litho prints in two sizes. If anyone made the mistake of entering my lair, they would end up buying something.

Hang a showstopper on the rear wall. You MUST stop the hoards of people rushing by like the Children of the Corn. Even if the big showstopper doesn’t sell, the art slows folks long enough to take a peek into your booth. No looks, no sales.

Please don’t wear dirty clothes. I remember a guy with pizza droppings on his white tee shirt. I couldn’t look at his art because my eyes kept fixated on the big red glob sliding down his rotund belly.

You will hate me when you read this. I recommend you stand for the entire show. If you worked at the Post Office, Dillards or as a cashier at Office Depot you would stand your eight-hour shift. You can’t sell art sitting on your butt.

If you feel you MUST sit then purchase a tall director’s chair that places you on eye level with your clients.

Do you know why Judges sit up high? Why the 5’5” J. Edgar Hoover of the FBI sat on a built up pedestal behind his desk? The added height gives power. If you are sitting in a lawn chair, the client has power over you. I always stood, but most of you won’t work that hard. You will find excuses as to why you can’t stand.

I find artists working shows tend to want people to select a piece of art, take it down, bring it to them for the purchase and make sure to have the correct change.

Today, the biggest distraction at shows is the cell phone. Do those things have an off button? I don’t know, we don’t have one. About 20 percent of artists doing shows are either texting, tweeting or talking on their cell phone for 90 percent of the selling time. I’ve seen people lined up to buy while the artist is behind the booth or turned away, chatting on his cell phone. We listened to one female artist talk for at least twenty minutes complaining to her friend how bad the show was. While we were standing in her booth, at least a dozen prospects stopped to look. She was too busy giving the show promoter a cussing to take care of prospective buyers. Her work was exceptional but her attitude was nasty.

The absolute worst is reading books or newspapers during the show. We went to the giant Fountain Hills Show in Scottsdale a few years back. In fact, we went several times just to observe. If my memory is correct, they had 470 booths. I kept notes as we went from tent to tent. About 140 of the artists were sitting outside in back of their tents reading books or newspapers. Their tents opened through to the back where they had their lawn chairs. If you wanted to talk with them about their art you had to walk through the tent to where they were sitting on grass, under the cool shade trees. They spent $300 to $400 for their booth fee plus the cost of travel and framing the art. Then add in the time it took to hang their show. They get to the event and hide behind a book. Artists like this need to stay home and save their money.

Talking to clients is so important. We counted 14 artists who didn’t speak to us. We made glowing comments on their work like, “This would go great over our couch.” I stood next to one girl as she sat in her green and white lawn chair. I said to Mikki, “What do you think the price is?” Mikki answered, “I don’t think the price matters, it would be so perfect in our dining room.” The artist never budged. I moved in front of her thinking surely she would acknowledge me. That ploy didn’t work, so in desperation I removed a small painting and handed the piece to her. I asked, “What is the price on this one?” She looked startled, “Uhhhhhh, that one is not for sale.” Why on God’s green earth did she rent a booth?

Even worse is entertaining your friends in your booth. We have seen this on several occasions. The artist’s family will visit their booth, standing right in the middle to catch up on the latest gossip. I’ve counted as many as nine people visiting with an artist during the prime selling time. Aunts, cousins, old high school friends. It doesn’t matter; all of them are toxic. Make an appointment to go to dinner with them after the show. Explain to family and friends that the show is how you earn your living. If you were a doctor they wouldn’t come watch you cut out someone’s liver. Get rid of friends and family as fast as possible. You can visit yourself into the poor house. Understand you paid good money and went to a great deal of effort to get to the show. Spend every possible moment in your booth talking to clients. Art has to be sold.

Even more egregious than having your space crammed full of friends is to leave your booth unattended. It’s a mystery why so many artists set up their tent and then take off to tour the show. You see them talking up a storm four aisles over as if they were there to enjoy the day. I started selling while setting up my tent and was the last one to leave. I always sold one or two pieces after the show was officially over. In the same vein, you will see next-door vendors standing behind their tents visiting or smoking, leaving their stores unattended. You can’t sell if you are not in your booth. When I had to take a potty break I would ask a couple, who seemed interested in my art, to please keep an eye on things while I made a dash to the port-a-potties. I was never surprised when the couple picked something to buy while they were watching my booth. I always gave them a nice savings. For food, I’d pay some kid a couple of dollars tip to go get me a burger. I kept water under my table.

Watch your teeth. One beautiful lady selling fine silk paintings had lettuce in her teeth. Finally, I saw a mirror on her table and gave it to her. She thanked me profusely when she saw the green string dangling between her front teeth. The same goes for bad breath. I kept mints in the event I had halitosis. Nothing kills a sale like bad breath.

We saw a tent sign, “No one enter without permission.” Need I say more?

The placement of where you stand, or if you use a tall captain’s chair, should be at the edge of your tent just outside the opening. At some indoor shows you have to remain in your space, but for outdoor tent shows or malls you can cheat a tad. Don’t block your entrance. When people start in your booth, greet them but then step back from the opening. You don’t want people to feel trapped. Let the folks walk in and wander around. When the lookers focus on one painting then you enter, but not before. Always keep in mind the client is afraid you will sell them. By you backing away at first, the client will begin to relax. Don’t block the front of your space with a long table half way across the entrance. Put the table on one side.

Guard your money. When I did shows I wore cowboy boots, keeping my money in a billfold that fit in my boot top. NEVER leave your cash box on top of or under a table. Belly belts are ugly, but they are better than having your money stolen. One of the biggest complaints these days is stolen cash. It’s almost an epidemic. When the tab came to $175.60, I rounded the number to $175. Not making coin change really speeds up the selling process and besides it’s safer. You don’t need a cash box, but instead use a neck pouch or fanny pack. When we travel internationally, I wear a neck pouch with a steel cable cord. The pouch is for passports, credit cards and bigger bills. TravelSmith.com has these. At shows keep all your big bills, credit card slips and checks in the pouch and small bills in your pocket. If your pocket is picked the thieves won’t get much. Shows are swarming with thieves. The bigger shows are filled with con artists ready to make you the deal of your life. They slither through the aisles like snakes looking for a rabbit.

I forbid show music and candles. You are not at the show to entertain; selling is your focus. I’ve seen clients get in a conversation with the artist on where she purchased her candles and what’s the scent. The same goes for music. You want nothing to distract from your main goal: selling art.

Framing. For goodness sake, find a way to transport your frames without banging them up. I put pieces of cardboard between each painting. One artist carried his work in clear plastic bags. Carry a frame touch up kit. If you don’t have a kit, use shoe polish. For art under glass, keep a bottle of Windex handy. You only get one shot at a good first impression.

The most important thing to remember, above all, is a positive attitude and personal involvement are the keys to a successful show.

The economic downturn has made the already challenging proposition of pursuing artistic work as a full time profession even more difficult. This means that you, the professional artist, need to increase your ability to be self reliant.

What does that mean? Simple, you need to be the driving force behind marketing and selling your work.

You might say, “But my job is to produce the art, I don’t have time to market it (and I am not comfortable doing that anyways).” I understand that your skills, training and inclination may all argue against doing your own marketing. I have been an artist for 30 years and feel the same way! But you should recognize that the world has changed and you both can and must do a lot of your own marketing.

You have the tools to do this–tools that no artist had in the past. And the art market is also becoming more competitive.

Bottom line: you need to ask yourself, “why am I creating this work?” If art is your profession as well as your driving passion, the answer combines the desire to see your work shared with the world with the very practical need to keep the lights on in your studio.

ArtPrize Starts today

For the next 19 days Grand Rapids Michigan is home of ArtPrize. ArtPrize has with over 1800 artist present so the town is buzzing. I am almost finish with my set up with my Exhibition.I just have few finishing touches to add this morning.My exhibition a Year of Daily Painting can be viewed at the Waters Building.

The week started for me on Sunday with the welcome to ArtPrize party at The Bob. That was one big party. There will be 100 artist located at The Bob Venue.

Here are some pictures from around town at some of the almost 200 place where artist will be located. Some are still setting up .

It’s hard to believe it’s nearing the end of summer. Labor Day has come and gone and I will soon be traveling.to Art Prize is coming this month and I am still rushing to put the finishing touches on everything.That is why I have a big smile on. Why I Like selling art on line

At a Show:
If it’s bad weather, trying to find a close parking space and carrying your precious artwork across the wet (or icy) parking lot is no fun at all. If the event is outdoors and it’s raining, then your work is even more at risk. And of course, in bad weather there will also be fewer people in attendance.

With your work floating over the web, you’re as warm as toast and dry as a bean, barring the occasional power outage, of course.

Having said all of that I spent most of the day today planing for ArtPrize 2011 my next big event.

Carol Marine daily painter tragic fire

Texas Wildfires Claim Artist Friend's Home and Studio

My thoughts and prayers are with fellow artist and Daily Painter Carol Marine, her husband and their family who lost their home and everything they own in the Texas wildfire of Bastrop over the weekend. The family is reportedly safe, but, sadly, in the fires she also lost her entire new studio which was just completed in May of this year.

Carol was one of the original Daily Painters back in 2006 when the wave started to build. I have always admired her masterfully-composed, direct paintings, with her signature brushstroked and luscious color.

The family has good insurance, but if you'd like to donate to a fund to take care of their immediate financial needs, you can find a Paypal link at her book site.

Its A Rocky TIme

It's a Rocky start to September as I am getting ready for my big Sept art event ArtPrize 2011. The post man left my new box of 2000 business card on the sidewalk in the rain. I came hoe last night and there was the soggy box falling apart and dripping wet. The water had penetrated the box and the card boxes in the inside were damp but the card themselves were not to bad. They were a little limp but I think they will recover. I can order the cards from VistaPrints a great place to get your business cards, just order early because the shipping takes 28 days.

Don't Leave the House

Don't leave the house,
Stay right at home and paint. Tip of the week. There is so much right in front of you in your own home. Use a view finder or just look through your camera. Dishes in the sink, iron sitting there calling to be painted, spices on the rack, and this week with me it's canning and canning junk,stuff, masterpieces waiting to be immortalized with my brush.

Need more inspiration visit lots of art. The more you see the more inspired you will be.

Art on the Rocks

I made it to Marquette, Michigan Art on the Rocks.

The Harbor view was wonderful.

Everyone started setting up their tents. The event was not as well laid out as it had been in years past with lots of dead end rows and very difficult for visitors to find their way around. Many of the artist had had a tough week, because they had just finished the Ann Arbor Art Show in 100 degree heat. The breeze off of Lake Superior was a welcome addition to this event making set up a little easier.

The crowds were light and sales were slow.

After the show the show I took a week off and toured upper Michigan. I ate a wonderful Pasty . If you would like to have the recipe for these wonderful Michigan treats click here. with real full tummies we decided to rest and take the scenic boat tour of Pictured Rocks.

A must see if you are in the area. I wished I had my kayak with me. Another reason to come back again just for the fun of it.

Field of Paint

One of the main problems many artists have with credentialed shows is that the effort upsets the natural flow of personal process. The better artists I know get up in the morning, put on their pants, and go to work. Figuring out where the work is to end up and who they are as artists comes afterward. Artist Tip of the Week

I an doing the art show Art On the Rocks in Marquette Mi this weekend July 30 and 31. As I was getting my list of things together for the show I thought I would share some of the must have items with you.

Item	Intended Use
Duct Tape	XXX Important - attaches anything to anything.
Bungee Cords	Hold a display to a table, or possibly hold up the table.
Spring Clamps	Good all around fastener.
Step Stool or Ladder	If you were tall, you would be in the NBA not doing craft shows.
Hammer	A must have for pounding in stakes and fending off unwanted visitors.
Nylon Rope	Keep it handy for attaching tie down screws or dragging your car out of the mud.
409 or Similar Cleaner	Because even despite your best efforts stuff will get dirty.
Waterproof Coat	I know it's not gong to rain, just bring it.
Pliers	Tightens any bolt and converts Mesh Panels, so you don't have to try with a spring clamp.
Did We Mention Duct Tape?	You will need it. Do not leave home without it.

Ann Arbor Art Fair

The Ann Arbor Art Fair use to rank in the top 10 art show in the US. It has since slip to the bottom 100 but it is still a wonderful show to visit and is certainly the best show that Michigan has to offer.

I attended the Ann Arbor art Fair yesterday ,the opening day of the art show. I like to go the first day early because it is not so crowded and I can talk to the artist, many of them friends of mine that I just don't get to see much of.. The crowd was heavy at first. I was there for about an hour and had seen some of the best art in a show that I had ever seen at this show. It was over the top and got a big WOW from me,
The temperature had climbed to over 95 and I just couldn't take the heat any longer. I stop and got a cold beverage and went on for about another half hour made a few purchases.I wasn't alone in the leaving because of the heat the crowd had thinned to a trickle. I stock up on my Christmas gifts So many really quaint items to select from. I had only seen about half of the show when I decided to head for home ,I was feeling ill from the heat and decided to call it a day.

Bring an umbrella to help keep the sun off of you and go take a look; it is wonderful a wonderful art show with warn friend artist. If your time is limited or you think you couldn't see much of the show, here is a list of the artist and their booth numbers so you make them your first stop.

You Tube Video

Making a You Tube Video is not as easy as you might think. I have a great camera a Canon GL 2 which I have been told is outdated and does not work with my new lap top. I bought the camera 2 years ago and

it was not cheap.I paid over $ 2000.00 for it.

I considered it an investment in my artistic career at the time. I said, gee whiz,when I was told it was outdated; I just bought it. I was told that it had been on the market for several years and was considered dated now.

I have been trying to learn how to use it over the last 2 years, I'm a slow learner. I have made about 5 video with it, none that will get any awards but I have started.

I bought the software for video editing and started. So I have a big investment into five not very good videos now.

My old desk top HP was getting slow and I thought it was time for a new computer . I got a New top of the line HP laptop. It was one of the New Entertainment PC from HP. I didn't realize that my bright new new lap top doesn't have a firewire port and also had no place for a application to make one.

I went back to the store where I purchased it and ask about an adaptor of some kind for my new laptop to be able to run my camcorder download to the computer and edit them, and publish to you tube or make CD's. They said HP doesn't make it for their new lap tops because the new cheaper model of camcorders do not need firewires. They told me I should have bought an Apple.

I went home and called Canon and HP support. Canon doesn't return my emails and HP sent me India where the person had no idea what I was talking about nor could she understand my English.She ask me to spell my name 3 times (SMITH) . I felt like was talking to that guy on the Discover Card commercial
Peggy.

I also called B&H where I purchased the Camera and buy all my video supplies. B&H told me the camera was out of date and they offered nothing to help me with my PC problem.

My blood is still boiling over at all of this but I will figure it out.
I am using my tiny little travel HP TouchSmart which has a slid out adaptor to accommodate a fire wire Express Card so I am still in business for a while.

As I said the learning curve can be steep if you do not just dive in and start. So I am really going to start working at this part of my marketing effort, road blocks and stumbling stones aside. Today was my first attempt at put my voice with a video clip. I accidental edited out parts of the sound. I have lots of work to do to get better at this. But I have a goal and a direction in mind. I wanted to keep this as a reminder of where I started. and I hope to get better real soon.

Tip of the week:

I am starting this tip of the week and I will see how long I can go before I run out of great ideas.

This weeks tip is: Make a viewfinder.

A viewfinder is a simple yet extremely useful painting tool which helps you to select and isolate particular elements in a scene to get the best composition.

The shape of the viewfinder's opening must correspond to the shape of your drawing or painting. Simply put, a viewfinder is a piece of card with a rectangular window cut in the middle. It works like a window in that it helps the artist compositions for painting whether this is landscape or portrait mode. All the artist has to do is look through. Making one requires a few simple objects and about half an hour. To get some simple instructions on making one click here. Or do what I do use an old slide frame that I have taken the slid out of. Jerry's Artarama sells a really nice one for about $3.00.

Art is the product or process of deliberately arranging items a way that influences and affects one or more of the senses, emotions, and intellect. It encompasses a diverse range of human activities, creations, and modes of expression, including music, literature, film, photography, sculpture, and paintings.

The meaning of art is explored in a branch of philosophy known as aesthetics, and even disciplines such as history and psychology analyze its relationship with humans and generations.

Primary Colors

What are the Primary Colors? Red , Yellow, Blue are the Primary Colors. Primary colors are important in art because when mixed together they can produce every other color in the world (with a little white or black added as well).

THE BASIC PAINTS: Limited three color palette. This is a “dead color” (black) group. (I’m choosing to go for very unsaturated.}

1. raw sienna or yellow ochre for yellow

2. burnt sienna or Indian Red for red

3. French Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue for blue. If you were working in oil, you could use black because in dilution with white and in the right context it will read as blue.Some black are green when mixed.

A small Pallet knife painting a did recently. This painting is available at my web site Delilah Smith.>Painting with a knife is a bit like putting butter or jam on bread and produces quite a different result to a brush. Painting knives are excellent for producing textured, impastowork and sweeping areas of flat color as well as tiny shapes of color.

Today's daily painting is done with a brush on canvas. This is one of my small daily paintings.

How to Add a Light Bridge to your Painting

Light bridges add interest your art work.You can achieve this by eliminating the outside edge by dragging two wet layers of paint, the light and the shadow together and blend their edges. Also the far edge of an object also can be removed as a place of focus by lightening the background where the edge and background meet.

Edges on the lighted side do not start darker. When light hits a surface it is as lit up at the edges as it is inside.

A soft edge shows continuity, the softer the edge the duller the look, a hard edge shows ending. The harder the edge the from riveting your painting is in that area.

Business Card for Art Prize

Business cards are always a must for Artist.

I would expect that most artists have a business card with current contact information and the very important web address and email. As ramp up all my marketing efforts for ArtPrize 2011 business cards are at the top of my list. For many artist, this event is about more than making the top ten or the grand prize; it is an opportunity to expose your work to a new audience.

That is how I am looking at ArtPrize, a way to show what a daily painter can do in 365 days.

Does your the card also have an image of current artwork? Mine always do. I'm not sure what to do for ArtPrize: one large image of a painting, several images or something that shows the whole exhibition that I am planing.

That quick view, even though small in size, can have a big impact on a brief encounter where cards might be the only things that helps a visitor remember your work after viewing 1582 other artist. I know I was on overload by the end of the first day when I went to view ArtPrize 2010 last year to see if was anything I wanted to do in the future. The amount of really good art and the variety was over the top.

I suspect, though, that with so much promotion being done online today that the business card doesn't get used as much as it should. I still like business cards. I like it when I have something in my hand from the artist or gallery, it always makes an impact on me.

I always get my business cards from Vista Prints and have been satisfied with them. You can download your artwork and they can print on both sides you can have a picture of your artwork on the front and contact information on the back. They have a high gloss card style that I prefer, it really shows off your artwork. The photo at the top is some of the business cards I have used in the past. some have the information printed over my painting, then I use the back to write on. The bottom one is a free card available at vista prints I use it with my aceo sales it is about the same size as the art so it is a great fit in the little bag card. I spoke to an artist last year that by the 4th day had give out 4,000 business cards. It I do it right maybe I will be remember,

maybe it will help me not to get lost in this crowd of the best of the best.

1,582 artists from 36 countries and 43 states will show their work in 164 venues within three-square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Mich. Each artist will compete for the world’s largest prize for art, which will take place Sept. 21-Oct. 9, 2011. Participating artists and venues can all be viewed on the Artist List.

The Trials of the Artist

You would think that painting the small daily paintings for Art Prize would be challenge enough but getting ready for it is even more of a challenge.

AWESOME! So only 260 of your paintings--does that mean the others sold??

To answer Robin's Questions: My original proposal was to have 365 painting on display at art prize, a year of daily painting. The display would have been 20 feet long and 5 feet high. With 1582 Artist participating in this even obtain a venue to display my work became problematic.

There was lots of out side space available like the lovely Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park .

A large wall for display was limited.Part of what make ArtPrize so interesting is that the art is displayed in building through out the town. If you think you are going to make a quick trip to Grand Rapids and see it all in a Day you will need to put on your running shoes.

I had lots of sorry we would love to have your work but do not have enough wall space for it. So I had to get creative think outside the box and take a leap of faith that I could do what I purpose with a small tweak in the exhibition plan.

I change the proposal to display on a free standing 10 feet long display where the small painting would be displayed on both sides. I changed the number to 260 leaving out weekends and helping to downsize the display.

As an artist you must be flexible an able to change as needed, if at all possible. It also helped for the sold paintings which I have been painting extras for sold works and I am still painting. If you follow my daily painters blog, Painting of the Day, you will see many of the paintings that have been painted since September 2010 through September 2011 at the show. All paintings will be in 5x7, 7x5 size like you see ,at the top of today's post. The paintings will be painted in oils, if you follow my Art on Paper blog none of those works will be displayed. There will be 260 of them. There are eight paintings shown at the top of today's post so take 32 times it and you get an idea of the size of this project. I will see you at ArtPrize 2011 God willing and the artist stays healthy.

A Few of my Daily Paintings

Well, it is official I am in Art Prize 2011. Securing a venue was difficult. I had gone to Art Prize 2010 and it was wonderful. I knew at once that I wanted to be part of this art happening. I had started planing in September 2010 for the show. What would I show? How would I display it? I decided on my daily paintings. So my display is a year in the life of a daily painter with 260 of my small daily paintings. I will keep you updated as I get ready for the show. Count Down 78 days until ArtPrize Starts.

I subscribe to Robert Glenn's twice weekly letter. It just pops into my email and it is always a joy to read. I found today's letter very interesting. Read on and take the little quiz at the bottom.

The school of life

Dear Artist,

Every year about 900,000 North Americans buy brushes and paints for the first time. Every year, often after a prolonged bout of frustration, about 800,000 folks decide painting is not their thing. These figures are confirmed by the statistics of artists' colourmen and art materials stores. Apparently, at any given time, three percent of the population is trying to paint.

On the surface, painting looks easy, offers mounds of personal satisfaction and has the potential of big bucks. But then again, so does golf. And we all know that golf makes grown men cry.

When closely examined, high-aimed painting is difficult, loaded with disappointment and the dubious benefits of poverty.

My basic idea is that pretty well all motivated persons can become realized painters. But it's a tricky, deceptive path with lots of sink-holes. Certain personality types, in my observation, have a better chance than others. To test yourself against my findings, give yourself a score of one to ten on the following twelve items. You don't have to score well on all. Out of a possible score of 120, if your score is over 70 you'll be a likely candidate for a life in art.

*philosophical

*passionate

*energetic

*obsessive-compulsive

*self-motivated, entrepreneurial

*loner, non-joiner, outsider

*hard worker

*patient

*exhibitionistic

*egoistic

*individualistic, resistant to prior programming

The personality traits listed above all sidestep the possibilities of innate talent. Curiously, many with loads of talent don't make it. Talent only completes the equation. While many may have some primal facility in drawing, color or composition, talent may be more the combination of some of those twelve personality traits. In the words of Louis Armstrong, "If ya ain't got it in ya, ya can't blow it out."

Our main job in life is to try to find out what we're good for. Life is a school. We keep taking tests. If we pass a test, we move on. If we fail a test, sooner or later we are given the test again. Failing or succeeding, wise artists know themselves and quickly move through the tests. In art, it takes a lifetime of moving through the tests. Fact is, they never stop coming.

THIS is SCOTT WADE. Check out what he does with the dirty cars by carefully and artfully removing portions of the dirt. According to his web site, he lives real close to a dirt road in San Marcos , Texas ....

Playing in the dirt has never been more fun. Making art should be about having fun and exploring. Scott has the the right idea, you make have to get a little dirty but what the heck. Like the farmer says" If you wrestle with a pig you both get dirty but the pig really likes it."

Here is what she had to say. I have her permission to post this and it sounded so interesting I thought I would try to support her.

Friends & Fellow Artists:

There are a few things weighing heavily on my mind, and I have decided to open up my life, heart, and expose my fragile pride in an attempt to possibly convince you to join with me, or at the very least, send your creative witty thoughts and pearls of wisdom. Please read this entire email, as I will tie up the loose ends and issue a challenge.

First....I seem to be struggling in the creative energy arena…painting suddenly seems like torture....probably due in part to the slight depression from knowing that come August , 3 of my four sons will have left the nest.

Second, are the friends, family members and fellow artists currently fighting breast cancer.Those who know me well know that I have lost 2 dear friends in the past 18 months to this disease. I have an Art for the Cure site where I sell pink art and donate as well as participate in multiple fundraisers benefiting breast cancer research and the breast cancer community.

The third thing weighing heavily on my mind and heart, as well as my knees, ankles and feet, are the extra 45 lbs that I am currently carrying on my 5 foot 5 inch frame.
I cannot believe I am actually publicizing the #, but to those who see me on a regular basis, it is certainly no surprise. Thank you though, for always making me feel as if I’m STILL the DIVA I like to think I was a few years ago!!!!
I need a new challenge….

So….here is the plan…….

Operation 47, Mission #1

I will lose 47 lbs by my 47th birthday, which is November 15th. Just under 5 months, so that is about 10 lbs a month, 2.5 lbs a week…certainly doable, most would agree, yet success has eluded me thus far. I know the hot new phrase is “Fabulous at 50”, it’s on the cover of every magazine, but I cannot wait 3 more years just because it sounds cooler!!

Mission # 2
I will paint 47 new paintings that I will sell for $47.00. each.

Mission # 3
I will donate $4.70 of each of those sales to one of the Breast Cancer foundations I currently support.

I will post my food, exercise, and paintings on my blog each day…..and open up the
comment option….so that you can leave those “pearls of wisdom”, etc.

I would love for you to join me…..by pledging to do whatever it is that you think would benefit you to do for 47 days……47 hours, 47 times….the sky is the limit, it could be as serious as 47 days of a new exercise program, not smoking, painting 47 pieces on a particular subject, or something fun like smiling 47 times in a day, or collecting 47 new whatever it is that you collect…..I don’t care what it is….but would love to hear about it…….and would love for you to share that journey with me…as I share mine with you…so log on and share at the bottom of the post where you see the little pencil!! Let's turn Operation 47 into CLUB 47!!

Just in case your first thought is "get rich quick scheme”…I have to buy paint, paper, board or canvas, an envelope for shipping, pay for shipping, and pay uncle Sam sales tax….all out of the remaining $42.30….So , you can clearly see it’s not about the $$$$, but about all the ways I can think of to stay focused on the # 47 long enough to reach my goal, raise a little $$$ for my favorite cause, give everyone the opportunity to be able to afford an original piece of art, and possibly spread a little motivation and encouragement to those who need it, in a creative way.

Creativity is a habit, there is no natural genius. One of the best things you can do if you want to become a better artist is get exposure to other good artist who painting in a style that you enjoy.

Creativity vs Skill: It takes skill to paint what you imagine in the middle of the night or in day dreams. Skill can be developed by practice,repetitive learning and pain staking reflection on your work. Creativity must be nurtured . Whether you paint photo realism, abstract expressionism, or something in between you must be able to build those Lego bridges between skill and creativity.

I love all medium of art. I often take a break from oil painting to explore some of them. I keep coming back to oils ,I love the way it spread on the canvas creamy and thick or smooth and transparent. I like the way oils reflect light and the endless color combination I can make.

High Curiosity

Twice a week I get a nice email in my in box from Robert Glen.

They are always well written, he has a way with the written word that paints color in my mind a way that I aspire to be able to write like.

Today he he waxed colorfully on the art of measuring yourself for four virtues--motivation, curiosity, work habits and ego force--you can get an idea how your own chances stack up.

Then again you might just become a roaring success by being lackadaisical, ignorant, lazy and without confidence. In the funny game we call art, it's been done. Regarding ego force, we don't always like people who have it. If you have it, and need to be liked, you ought to consider letting most of it come out the end of your brush.

Baby Steps

No matter what you're trying to achieve or transform in your life, my bet is that the easiest, and probably the fastest way to "get there" is to commit to a series of daily baby steps. List small, simple actions you can take in pursuit of your goals every single day. Then commit that you will do them, every day, no matter what. I have started my green series. I plan to work through about 30 ideas painting them small. I then want to take 5 or 6 of these ideas and expand on them. Trying larger paintings with them.I also plan on doing at least 2 large abstracts just to make me stretch a little.Big plans but I have started the Baby steps.

This is the first in my green series of spring paintings. I added a little whimsical note by putting a small fairy in it. I hope the frog knows it's not a bug.

A little Fun in the Studio

A "paraprosdokian" is a figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected in a way that causes the reader or listener to re-frame or reinterpret the first part. It is frequently used for humorous or dramatic effect, sometimes producing an anticlimax.

So for fun today I am passing this along to you.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

When Life give you Lemons

Every month I send out a few letters to galleries and shows I would like to be represented in. Sometimes I get in Yahoo, sometimes I don't so mush work but a must do for the artist. When I receive several rejections in a row my frail ego takes a beating, but one artist take a very creative look at those thank you for your submission letters and turns them into art.

The Color Green

As you know I am a daily painter, Some paintings are great others are so so and few , well they just get tossed. what daily painting does is it creates a habit. The habit of thinking about titles,subject matter,how to paint something remarkable that no one else has thought of yet, or the same old thing but make it look so different. The habit of painting makes you get a little better each time you pick up the brush.

I read this article on the ArtBusiness.com , I found it interesting because I think all of these have contacted me many times but they never seemed like something I wanted to do. I think the best way to get into a gallery is to do the foot work on your own. It is the the very best way to learn.

If you receive solicitations to participate in any for-profit exhibitions, galleries, publications, contests or competitions where you have to pay for the privilege of being included, first read the article Art Contests, Competitions, Shows and More Where You Pay Up Front-- Will They Get You Somewhere? Or Are They Dead Ends, Time Wastes or Scams? Then THOROUGHLY research any such offer-- BEFORE you pay. The article explains how to do this research right. No matter how marvelous an opportunity sounds, get the facts, get informed, and then make your decision.
Artists often find out about these offers through various forms of advertising, particularly mass emailings. The more agressive senders relentlessly bombard artists with emails and sometimes even contact them directly by phone. Costs to participate can range anywhere from several hundreds to thousands of dollars, especially if you factor in incidental expenses like shipping, travel, insurance or accomodations. Whatever the circumstance, make sure you are aware of all costs and potential benefits or drawbacks in advance. Does everyone benefit... or is it more like you pay, they play? When a painting goes wrong

Today I started a painting of eggs on a white towel. I worked on it for three hours when I realized it just wasn't making it. I scraped some areas down and started again. I couldn't get the painting to hold together. Sometimes when this happens I set it down and go back to it in a few days but today I gave up and cleaned the canvas off. Sometimes it's better to give up and try on another day.

Michigan Art

I am glad that Michigan has not forgotten the art's. With so many family with unemployed or unemployed family members I know it can be a hard thing to think about. Art can take a back seat when food and housing are on their minds.

The Rust Belt to Artist Belt III conference will take place this Wednesday and Thursday, April 6 and 7 at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Artists, creative business owners and practitioners, educators, and designers will meet in Detroit to explore how post-industrial Rust Belt cities are being shaped by creative individuals in the areas of economic and community development, and land use.

Panel discussions, workshops, and facilitated sessions will be used in order to help identify the best way to use the Rust Belt’s unique assets to encourage economic growth and efficiency.
Featured speakers/panelist for the two day conference include: Greg Garrett, Chief Strategy Officer, IT and Innovation, for Volkswagen North America; Director and Chief Curator of the Museum of Contemporary Arts Detroit, Luis Croquer; Detroit-based singer and songwriter Monica Blaire; Grammy, Emmy, and Tony award winning artist, songwriter, and

Monochromatic Painting

Working on a Painting

I am still working on this painting that I started a few weeks ago.I have been working on the color and value in the still life.

A painter has five basic weapons in his armoury.

1. Tone

2. Colour Intensity.

3. Texture.

4. Warm & Cool.

5. Linear Composition & Shape.

Using shape we can make things larger in the foreground and smaller as they recede. Using warm and cool we can make things appear to recede as we can with tone.

More detailed texture in the foreground will also bring things into apparent focus. But the use of colour intensity can make objects actually appear to be several inches in front of the canvas.

I liked the feel of the painting here, but this is a commission and so I'm got a few more things to add.

I needed a little contrast so I added a few dark flowers.

I am still working on this so there will be more updates to come. It's time for bed right now, so more tomorrow.

ARTPRIZE MAKES COMMITMENT
FOR MORE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE

Grand Rapids, Mich. – March 14, 2011 – Today, venue registration for ArtPrize 2011 opened. ArtPrize officials announced a dedicated Exhibition Center for music and performance. Music and performance have played a small role in the competition, which gives away the world’s largest art prize and had over 250,000 visitors last year, but organizers dedicated St. Cecilia’s Music Center–boasting a 650 seat auditorium–as a focal point for the 2011 event.

“I often say ArtPrize is the world’s largest excuse to get creative, and it’s been explosive its first two years,” says Rick DeVos, ArtPrize founder. “Going into year three, we continue to be intentional about making it open to a broad spectrum of creativity. We invite other performance venues to be ArtPrize venues and really experiment with how music and live shows can play a bigger role.”

General rules stay the same. Any space within the three-mile ArtPrize district can register on the website to become a venue. Artists and venues “connect” through the website to organize their exhibitions (ArtPrize organizers do not select any artists for the event). Exhibition Centers, which serve as large venues and launchpads into each neighborhood, are not-for-profit institutions and include the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Diocese of Grand Rapids’ Cathedral Square, the Women’s City Club, the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Grand Rapids Public Museum, Grand Valley State University, St. Cecilia’s Music Center, as well as Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Also, a twist on how visitors track the competition, ArtPrize organizers announced that no longer will the website display the top 25 vote getters during the first week of the competition. Instead, the top 25 artists in each of the five neighborhoods will be on display. Read More »

Artists and Galleries

I visited an Art Gallery at Clearwater Beach Fl yesterday. When I am in an area I try to see as much art as I possible can. One of the artist who work I saw was Martin Quen.

Her work reminds me of Kandinsky and Mark Rothko. When I view art I think of it as a visual poem. It can imply,suggest,take you to a special place with it's images and colour. Visual movement is like a song to my soul. Colours bright, cool,warm, move me ,they dance through my mind.

What are you thinking when you look at art? I hope it makes you smile and think about what the artist is saying in his visual poem.

Starting a large painting

For me the hardest part of doing a painting is just starting. I have been procrastinating on this one for too long, so it's times to just do it.

I put together the stretcher frame for this painting because it is an odd size. I normally buy prestretched canvas but with the increases in supply cost I may start stretching all of my own large canvas in the future.
I use an electric staple gun because I have small hands and it is difficult to pull the canvas tight enough and staple it at the same time. Elvis one of my studio cats always wants to help.

Okay, Elvis say's " I think I will just watch this time".
Stretched and a base tonal coat of paint on it.
At last a start on this one.

Painting Challenge

If your paintings are fussy and overworked, this challenge is for you! It will force you to slow down, think and make each brush stroke count.

INSTRUCTIONS: Draw your subject (any) on your canvas/board. Make sure you get everything in just the right place – this is very important for this challenge. Then, with a brush (if you have them use flats or brights – at least ½” wide), mix one color. Put down one stroke on your canvas/board. If it’s wrong, mix a new color and put a new stroke directly over the first. Mix a new color (feel free to adjust the first color, on your palette, to get the second, but make sure to start a new pile when needed). Put down one stroke. Mix a new color. Put down one stroke. You get the idea. Don't worry about edges – your painting SHOULD look sort of like a mosaic when you get done. If you start fussing, no dessert for you tonight!

HINTS: Squint at your subject – paint what you see when you squint. Ignore what you think you see. Step back a few feet after every single stroke – oh yeah, stand to paint! Remember that value is the most important thing to be accurate with. Your color can be completely off, but if the value is off your object(s) won’t look 3-dimensional.

Follow your Whims in Art

A whim is a strange or capricious notion; a temporary eccentricity. A person or thing that has many whims can be called whimsical.Art has passion and a whim can often change the direction of that artistic passion.

Following a whim can add new life to your art let your passion be fun and always explore possibilities.

When I paint my small daily paintings I try out new ideas. These small works are usually 5x7, so if I find an idea that intrigues me I can develop it into a larger work.

The Painting Challenge

The challenge: Paint this image using only burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white. That's it. No other colors. With that combo you can have it look pretty darn close to a full color painting by achieving a wide array of values and temperatures.

Every DPW (Daily Paintworks) a group of wonderful daily painters has a challenge and anyone can give it a try. The fun part is all the paintings are post on their blog for all to see.
